Spotify saying "Spotify can't play this right now" and skipping songs?

Spotify saying "Spotify can't play this right now" and skipping songs?

Plan

Free

Country

USA

Device

iPad Air 4th Gen

Operating System

IPad OS 18.3.1

I use Spotify on the web player, NOT THE APP, and I'd prefer to keep using the web player if at all possible.

My Question or Issue

Last night when I used Spotify it was completely fine, but suddenly it's not working. I'll try to play a song on Spotify web player on Chrome, but it will display the message "Spotify can't play this right now", and rapidly skip about six songs, and then start "playing" the song it stopped at, although I hear no audio, both with and without headphones. I do use Bluetooth as I cannot plug in my headphones, but this has never caused problems before.

I looked at several other communities posts and tried to follow the advice as best I can, but none of the issues were exactly the same and most of the problem solving ideas were things I don't think I can do on iPad.

I have updated the Chrome app [on the app store], and cleared my cache and browsing data, but it still persists. I've never had this issue before, and if I try to play sounds through anything else such as YouTube on browser, it works just fine, this issue only seems to be with Spotify. Also, for context, I have updated Chrome AFTER the issues started, so I don't think the update caused this.

Any ideas what it could be? Thanks.

Having this exact issue on safari too, they definitely messed something up.

I’m having this problem too but I use wired headphones so its definitely not your headphones 😭 not sure why its doing this

Hey there folks,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.

We could replicate this behavior, so we'd like to gather some additional info. Please send us:

  • The make/model and exact OS version of the affected devices.
  • The browser in which you noticed this behavior.
  • A video recording of this behavior. You can attach the videos in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload them to YouTube or Google Drive and make them public, so we can visualize them.
  • Does this happen no matter what content you choose to play?
  • Does this happen both when using Bluetooth devices and when the playback comes from your iPads?

Make sure to send us all these details, so we can pass it onto the right team.

Keep us in the loop!

The issue ended up resolving itself so I can’t give a video, but I can still give some other info in case it’s still an issue for some.  I’m on a 9th gen iPad running iOS 18.3.1 and only tried in safari.  I was just playing songs, I never tested podcasts or anything like that.  I was using wired ear buds, no Bluetooth stuff.

Hey there @MythicBitch,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

We noticed this issue is resolved for us well. It seems this was just a temporary connection issue. In that sense, we'd suggest both your browser and your device stay up-to-date. That way you can ensure that everything is going to work as expected.

We really appreciate the time you took to let us know about this.

We'll be here if anything else comes up.

Take care!
