Syncing my iPod nano to Spotify

I am trying to use Spotify on my ipod nano and the process doen't seem complicated except for the fact that my ipod nano does not show up when I connect it with my USB plug. The directions I am reading say that my ipod should show up under the device column but it is not. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions?

What generation of iPod nano is it? Spotify unfortunately do not support any of the newer models that use the lightning connector rather than the old style larger 30 pin connector.
