Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

It stopped working after updating to 17.5

What a nonsense – I was sure I made a mistake as such a fundamental CORE function could never, ever be removed from an app. BUT – it has happened. Totally unusable app now. When having guests and wanting to turn volume up and down discretely like a zillion timed before: impossible.

Person(s) responsible for such a stupid decision should be terminated.

Yea this is bogus. The volume buttons in my phone don’t work when I stream to my Sonos. But for some reason the dial in my Apple Watch will work if I open the Spotify app.

if I disconnect from the Sonos both my volume buttons and Apple Watch can control the volume fine so … please fix this. We pay for this thing after all.

I can’t control the volume on my connected speakers on iOS with the volume buttons on my iPhone anymore but not long ago I could. This is a very new issue and it’s extremely annoying as this is a very important feature.

Me too!

This is not completely true. It works from time to time by accident. I haven’t figured out when and how yet.
If moderator Maria’s answer is an official and final one from Spotify I must confess that this removed feature will migrate me from Spotify to Tidal.

Does not work for me at least

Volume stop work again on watch crowd!

IOS 17.5.1

WatchOS 10.5

This is ridiculous, casting with all its features is the only thing that keeps me with bad music quality Spotify lol, time to reevaluate migrating to AM

It never works for me.

This bug or feature loss is so annoying in daily use, that there is no other option then to switch to airplay. And cancel Spotify subscription.
With the Apple Watch you cant control volume since ever, it just works in rare cases. Its a mess!

Device

iPhone 12

Operating System

iOS 17.5.1

My Question or Issue

Since several weeks I can't use the volume buttons on the left of my iPhone anymore to change the volume on my Sonos speakers. This was always a real great feature and very useful for me.

Now I have to open the Spotify app instead, click on the speaker symbol and have to push the slider. That's awful!

Please bring back again the option for using the iPhone hardware buttons to change the volume on Sonos speakers.

This is so annoying. Losing such a feature is a big disappointment. Please fix this Spotify Team.

Cannot control the volume of Google Cast device.

This used to work perfectly.

Experiencing the same issue on 17.5. But also experienced it on 17.4.1 intermittently on a Google nest mini. Now though it’s permanently not working and I can’t even get it working for a microsecond, like previously was possible sometimes. Friends with 17.4 and earlier can control my Sonos with Spotify connect hardware volume control but not me, on my own system. Fix this FFS! We are paying customers and expect after so many years that this service would be usable at least to its core functions such as volume control.

I am wondering if it is something that have been limited by Spotify or by Apple...
We are blaming Spotify with this thread, but it could be something coming from Apple.

Does anyone know if Tidal is facing the same issue with Tidal connect following the recent iOS 17.5 update?

I just now sacrificed £13.99 for a month of tidal just to test this and it seems to work better. Volume buttons control Sonos volume when in the app but they just control the phone volume when app is in background. Also the tidal app doesn’t show in now playing. And volume control doesn’t seem to work on the lock screen either. Overall a mixed bag. At least the app is seeing the hardware inputs and doing something with them when it’s open unlike Spotify connect.

Same issue for me. Can't control Spotify volume over iOS when streaming to Sonos. This really is a big issue for me which really has me considering to cancel my subscription.

How is it possible that this app has this level of Jank. Look how the whole screen flickers when the volume changes. This is on my old android. I swear it didn’t act this jankily a year ago when I used this feature all the time. Has the app regressed? Why do all apps nowadays feel like I am VNCing into their system. They should be smooth snappy and fluid and actually feel like they run locally and not another webapp.

Extremely annoying. I have to unlock my phone, go to the Spotify app, select the speaker I’m listening to and there is a volume slide control on the screen that is very inconvenient to use. Before this issue and for the many years I’ve had Spotify my phone could be locked and all I had to do was use the volume up/down buttons on my phone. When you need to quickly adjust the volume you can’t do that anymore. This is an extremely important feature for me and if they don’t fix this soon I’m cancelling my Spotify Premium account. Any ideas on alternatives to Spotify?
