iPhone 4 Spotify unusable with BMW iDrive - iPhone unresponsive

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  • Power on car
  • Plug iPhone into car using USB cable
  • See Spotify automatically start on iPhone
  • Wait for Spotify option to appear in multimedia section on iDrive (10 second pause before it appears)
  • Select Spotify on iDrive and start it - note Spotify on iPhone appears to freeze (becomes unresponsive to input). Not sure if this is intended as I've never had it work correctly.
  • Generic BMW multimedia application screen shown for just under 30 seconds before spotify logos are overlayed on the screen.
  • Choice of 'Your Library' and 'Browse' available. Select library
  • Nothing further happens, stopped timing after 4 minutes.

What steps you’ve tried already:

 

  • Uninstall/Reinstall Spotify on iPhone
  • Restart iPhone
  • Installed Deezer (to rule out iPhone/iDrive/cable). It loads instantly (no 30 sec delay as screen is painted) and no playback issues.
  • Note this phone was recently factory reset (I got it just to use for spotify in the car)

The app version of Spotify you’re using: 5.7.0.1055

                      New 2 series car, latest software (001.050.002).

Any suggestions? I'd rather stay with spotify than jump to Deezer
