spotify wont sync on my ipod

i hooked my ipod up to spotify did the back up and i tryed getting it to sync but all it did was wipe it out so i got no music help me please

Do you have local files imported into Spotify to transfer onto the iPod? 

If you are using an iPod shuffle, nano or classic, then the Spotify client can only be used to sync local files which you already own to the device, not any content from the Spotify online catalogue.
