[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

I have been using Spotify since 2014 I believe, but as they are planning to increase the family plan from £17.99 to £19.99 next month, (last increase was in 2021 from £14.99 to £17.99, so £4 in three years) and due the continue stubbornness in keeping advertising premium users accounts on podcasts, I have now cancelled my account. It will end the 13/04. #byebyespotify

I will be trying Amazon Music Unlimited for their 3 month trial, and might switch if the service is good. We had a second raise of the price too, but we keep getting a degraded service such as the inclusion of ads in paid content, that is messed up.

I wanted something different from music and I have never tried podcasts. I picked the first one on the list that I recognized, Joe Rogan.
5 mins in I get an ad that I can’t skip, read by Joe Rogan. It’s a min long so I figure I just deal with it. After that one finished, I get another ad, can’t skip it, and this one is one minute and 20 seconds. So I’ve listened for 5 mins and I’m expected to listen to 2:20 in ads? I changed back to music and will never try another podcast again.

This is absolutely disposable from Spotify, it’s 2024 now and this thread is from 2021 yet they have made no effort to correct this.

We pay a monthly subscription for ad-free listening and yet Spotify is bombarding us with ads. In the earliest copy-paste, cop out reply that they provide they state the ads at least don’t interrupt the listening… it’s clear that they don’t respect their customers as they have in fact made the deal even worse for us as now we get ads crammed in mid content, in fact mid sentence!

I think a class action lawsuit wouldn’t be a stretch here.

I confirm that I will be cancelling my subscription too, I have been trying Amazon Music for a few days, podcast aren't plagued with undesired ads that the podcast creator didn't choose to support, and that you are forced to listen to. I was able to find 99% of all my current music using a playlist transfert tool, and their suggestive AI is pretty good. Android Auto has been amazing with them too.

Bye bye Spotify, it has been a great run, but you've completely lost your true nature.... #byebyespotify

My Question or Issue

Tengo plan Premium (comprobado y con los pagos al día) pero sin embargo me salta almenos un anuncio cuando escucho un podcast.

I contacted Support yesterday about this issue and was told that the Creator of the Podcast is inserting this advertising, which I know is a lie. It is regionally based advertising based on the IP address I am sure. I live in Michigan and am getting a lot of Michigan companies and Michigan promotions for National companies. I'm in touch with the Podcast Creator about the issue and the misinformation coming from Spotify. The ads themselves are not the big issue for me - it was the untruths and blaming on the Podcast for obvious Spotify fundraising efforts. I am paying a monthly subscription fee which continues to increase. I'm using Spotify for Podcasts more than Music recently and assumed "ad free" means "ad free". This is a NEW issue - I have not experienced ads previously in the last 5 years I've had Premium.

Today's experience was as follows: Stamps.com ad for the opening minute, 20 minutes in I got another Stamps.com ad for 1.5 minutes, 20 minutes later I got another 1.5 minutes of ads but this time BetMGMCasino app and American Express, 40 minutes later I got 1.25 minutes of ads for BetMGMCasino and Michigan Dept of Health, 20 minutes later another 1.25 minutes of ads for BetMGMCasino and Michigan Dept of Health, 10 minutes later another 1 minute of ads for Michigan Dept of Health and Boll&Branch, 10 minutes later another 1 minute ad for FDA, 20 minutes later another 1 minute ad for FDA and Granger.com, then the last minute of the Podcast was more ads for FDA and Granger.com

That's NINE commercial breaks interrupting one Podcast and not strategically placed either in the discussions - many of them every 10 or 20 minutes. I haven't had this issue in the last 5 years and my subscription is higher now than previously. It definitely makes me consider cancelling my Family subscription on the Principle of this. The ads themselves do not bother me as much as the denial of this by Spotify, that they have not interruped me in all these years when I paid less, and now they are making money off of my subscription and advertising.

I’m open to a class action suit! They shouldn’t be able to advertise “ad free” if it isn’t. 😐

Given her track record re: consumer protection, I have to assume Elizabeth Warren would be all over this.

Spotify changed their terms long ago. Their original offer was "an ad free experience", but they have long since changed it to "ad free music".

In other words, they are legally safe, since podcasts aren't considered music. They can just blame the users for not paying attention.
