[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

What would be helpful is if Spotify listened to the people paying their bills and stop giving podcasters this option. Ad free premium is exactly that...ad free! If not, then add another tier that's half the price, THEN let podcasters put ads in their show. For 10.99/mo I had better not have any ads whatsoever!

My Question or Issue

Hi support team,

When listening to podcasts, another member of my family plan is receiving audio ads between episodes (not part of the podcast).

Examples are : MC Donald's and Magenta TV

According to the subscription terms, ads between or during content should not be there with a premium plan. Can you solve our problem and remove this annoying disturbance?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Hoping you can help me solve my problem

Best regards

Gary_B1

I am out in South Africa and had been experiencing add free podcasts until recently where now 'personalized' ads are being pushed through my Spotify, I agree this is ridiculous being a premium membership holder @Spotify please confirm the option where I can switch off receiving these adds.  I also have YouTube premium, where these 'personalized' adds are not interrupting the podcasts. I am now seriously reconsidering my premium membership, I pay membership costs to not receive these ads, however with the return of these ads what is the point of having a premium membership?

Your urgent attention will be appreciated.

Luan

Hi, @AnotherMax
Welcome to the Spotify Community, and thanks for reaching out to us!

Spotify Premium offers a free-ads experience when listening to music. When it comes to other kinds of content, like podcasts, you and the other members of the Family tier can get some ads during the episodes or between one episode and another one. However, you can easily skip them by tapping the 15-sec forward button.

Stay awesome! ✌🏽

If you have further questions or if you need anything else, let me know! I'd love to help!

Regards,
Luan 🎶

Hi, I am  premium subscriber, but from this morning I'm getting uber eats Ads during my podcast. it is definitely not the podcast ads. Why am I paying for premium and suddenly still have to listen to ads?

AnotherMax

Thank you for your answer!

The ads do not look related to the content (screaming MC Donald's ad directly after a mediation podcast) but I understand your insight. I will realise tests and see if it is localised on one account or all.

Stay awesome!

I'll add to this

Not sure if this is a subscription or podcast or ad question. Frankly: all help, community, marketing or documentation isn't going into details to this, so here goes nothing.

I'm a premium member (family, not that it should matter) that listens to music and podcasts.

No ads in music, since recently suspicious ads in podcasts. Let me explain suspicious.

I've listened to podcasts on Spotify before, and some have baked in product placement. All good, not complaining.

Since a week or 2, my favorite American podcast is taking intermission breaks, then an ad sound is played and a local (Dutch!) ad is played.

The only thing I could find in Community is 'how to play Podcasts' where it does say '3rd party ads' could be played.

However! This Dutch integration can only happen if Spotify shares my locale, or worse, provides local ads. TO PREMIUM MEMBERS.

Nowhere it explicitly states that Spotify still provides (either directly or directly facilitates) ads to Premium accounts.

Is this a bug or a very ugly side of not sharing all details about paid subscriptions?

hiii! i have some advice for you.

so basically you dont get ads for music, but you get ads for podcasts. why? i honestly dont know why but ads are just the integral part of podcasts cuz spotify said that.

I pay for Spotify premium. I don't understand why the majority of podcasts have ads. I'm not referring to when a podcast host takes on a sponsorship and talks about a product or service. I referring to ads that sound like they are a "TV" ad (ie a car ad).

I don't mind listening to the podcast host talking about something, but I don't want to hear ads that sound similar to a TV ad or a Spotify free ad while I'm listening to a podcast when I'm paying for a premium plan. This needs to be fixed.

Hello,

so I'm fine with adds the podcasters read into their shows. We all want to make a living.

But. These added on adds which spotify tries to palm off as "a choice made by the podcasters" is a breach if trust and a breach of what we pay for in our Premium subscription.

If this doesn't change I'll be cancelling my account.

Kind regards
