In the iOS app, I'd like to be able to configure the main green Play button on the right so that you can choose whether it plays an album in sequential or shuffle order. I know I can tap on the first song for sequential, but it seems that should be the default behavior for a play button. I'd like to see a setting to determine the default behavior of the play button. This seems like a better solution than, e.g., having two buttons which would clutter up the screen.

We'd recommend heading over to this Idea to add your +VOTE and feedback there and show your support.

Nonetheless, we'll keep this as New Idea since it requests the change for all platforms (not only mobile). Spotify staff will look into it once it reaches the needed amount of votes 🙂

Option for Premium users to change the Shuffle Play button to a simple Play button. Or perhaps the main button could be contextual: for albums it could be Play while for playlists it could be Shuffle Play.

I simply don't want Shuffle Play at the top of my albums—that's for free users and it's why I upgraded!

Agree it's silly to have a big Play button that only shuffles the songs.

A Play button should Play the default album order.

The little shuffle icon next to the Play button is misleading because it implies a toggle.

You could have a big Play button and a separate big Shuffle button if you really are trying to direct people to shuffle.

Simple as that:

Just look back to portables such as iPods, Walkmen or CD Players, Tape Players and Recorders, even digital apps out there ever since: All have a play button that plays start to finish, in predictable order.

Just do what everybody expects. No need to innovate here, it’s just confusing. Why bother anyway?

Just keep things stupid, simple.

This is really basic stuff you should understand easily and your UX team would give same advice.

Even the current "solution" is flawed...

You put a regular play button
But you also put a "footnote" onto that button a.k.a. shuffle icon
Done it right, you would have put a plain shuffle icon and no play icon at all (one button, one icon)
But that probably no user understood / wanted
So you went with a "compromise solution" (product team internal compromise) - which is in the end just nothing than a broken experience for your customers

Put it as you like. There is just no way around it. Current play functionality is broken.

Please all you UX gurus, it is just common sense. The green button attracts and guides user attention - and therefore it should be configurable. And since more and more audio books are in Spotify as well, shuffle is just the wrong default!

Wow, play albums and playlists in the order they were designed. What a novel idea, guess we need a million upvotes to see any action here

I find it rather astonishing that a company providing music as a service doesn't employ music specialists that understand that albums are usually designed by the artists and their producers to be played in the correct order, and default it to that behaviour.

Playing albums in the correct order is a musical journey, part of the artistry. You'd think someone at Spotify could have figured out by now that it should be the default.
