For the past couple of weeks I have been engaging with music creators based in Wellington, New Zealand. For those of you who are unaware, it is the city with the most vibrant music community in the country. (Probably because there are 3 music schools in that area!)
While talking about many different things, there was a comment made by an individual who said that links to music from Spotify are incredibly long and messy. It wasn't the main point of discussion (We were talking about music marketing as a whole), but for some strange reason that comment resonated with me; so much so that it got me thinking about it for the past week.
Now, usually artists in NZ (not sure about the rest of the world) would use third-party websites where they streamline all of their music links and socials into one link where you can find everything (for example, Bit.ly). That's cool and all, but that whole process of hopping out of FB or IG to a website, to then hop into the Spotify app/web player, is tedious and somewhat time consuming.
I am a stern believe that us as human beings are naturally impatient and always seek the easier option. Like my dad use to always say - 'Work smarter, not harder.' In this case, I certainly believe that Spotify could utilize branching out into making it's own version of URL shortener, where you can shorten the URL to an Artist's page, and Album/Song, or Playlist.
Perhaps instead of making it as a separate entity, it could be embedded in the web player and mobile app. It could be an option when someone wants to share, right next to the option of embedding the album/track. It could be used to share Spotify accounts, Musical Artists, Playlists (Even the Spotify curated ones!)
In summary, here is why I believe this is a good idea:
-Clean, short & tidy looking link (example: https://spot.ify/GhF43dZ )
-Musicians/Influencers enticed to use as it is more appealing to share on their socials (as opposed to example :https://open.spotify.com/track/6mOYNx2gBorMkPmqJhyhJ3?si=a0f691ab52cf6a )
-Increase traffic into Spotify web player/phone app as result from Streamlined process. (A to B as opposed to A to B to C)
-Challenge market share as it is Spotify exclusive.
