10 Year Evolution: Spotify Community

Can you believe it? It's been 10 years since the Spotify Community was launched on February 8, 2012. Time flies when we're having fun in the Community! 🎂 🔟 💚

Let's take the time machine back in time to look back at how the Spotify Community has evolved over the past 10 years. We'll start from 2012 until now in 2022, and along the way we'll go over all of the major changes.

You can also read how the Spotify Apps have changed over the last 10 years by going here.

2012:

In February 2012, the Spotify Community forum was launched to replace the old GetSatisfaction page. Spotify's goal was to create their own forum where users can gather to help each other, talk about music, and provide feedback to improve Spotify.

2013:

In 2013, the Community was updated with the new Spotify logo and the theme was updated to match the new Spotify branding. The Community was also separated from the main Spotify website.

2014:

In 2014, the Community received minor design updates. The most noticable is the updated "Back To Spotify.com" button.

2015:

In early 2015, the Community was updated with the new Spotify logo and the theme was updated to match the new Spotify branding.

In late 2015, some new design elements were also tested.

2016:

In early 2016, the design elements tested in late 2015 were removed and the design now looked more like it did in early 2015. These were most likely removed to focus more on the 2016 redesign.

In June 2016, the Community got its first major redesign and for the first time got its own logo. The homepage design changed to a navigation page instead of a list of every single board. The new homepage now showed a big search bar and the main areas you can go to, and featured blog posts below that. A right sidebar menu button was also added so users can quickly navigate to other parts of the Community without having to go back to the main pages. The Community website was also optimized for mobile browsers for the first time.

2018:

In late 2018, the Community background was refreshed with solid colors.

2021:

In early 2021, the Community got a major redesign with 3 fun color themes that are randomly applied to your session when the Community loads. Just about every page in the Community was refreshed to match the new design.

The Music Chat section expanded to become the Chat section with better labels. There's much more to chat about now.

A section was added to the homepage to feature the Stars. The dedicated Stars page also got a new design.

2022:

Did you notice anything different in your web browser recently when you visited the Community? The favicons, touch icons, and share images have been updated to better match the new Community design. Now when you visit the Community, the icon will stand out from the main Spotify website. The Community will now also stand out when links are shared to social media.

10 Year Evolution: Spotify Stars Program

The design of the Community isn't the only thing that has changed over the last 10 years, the Spotify Stars Program has also evolved.

Let's take the time machine back in time to look back at how the Spotify Stars Program has evolved over the past 10 years. We'll start from 2012 until now in 2022, and along the way we'll go over all of the major changes.

2012:

A few months after the Community was launched, the Community Managers noticed that there were a few users who had great helpful posts. These users were invited to be part of a superuser group with special perks. This group was unofficial and these users were called superusers.

2013:

In November 2013, the Rock Star Program was officially launched. The program became official and now had a name and a logo.

2014:

In August 2014, the first Star Jam took place. This is a yearly event where the top contributors in the program meet with Spotify staff to celebrate what they've accomplished that year.

You can read more about the Star Jams here: Spotify Star Jam over the years

2016:

In early 2016, the Rock Star Program had a big update. In this update, the program got a new logo and expanded to let Stars help other users on Twitter with an account just for the Stars. Stars also gained the ability to earn points for their contributions and redeem the points for prizes.

2021:

In May 2021, we launched our Stars Program Values:

Respect, Inclusion, Team Work, Support, Fun, and Responsibility

In August 2021, we had our first-ever virtual Star Jam called "Virtual Star Jam". The world is looking different these days so to adjust, the Community team wanted to make sure we could all still meet up virtually and include more Stars than previous Star Jams.

You may have noticed that the branding for the Stars Program wasn't clear in the first half of 2021. All big changes take time to be fully finished. This year a lot of work went into rebranding the program.

Throughout 2021, the program name transitioned to: Spotify Stars Program

After receiving feedback from Stars, this name change naturally made the most sense to move the program forward while still being familiar. The "Rock Star" program name was changed to "Spotify Stars" to make the program more inclusive and welcoming, with a goal to increase the diversity of the program members.

2022:

In January 2022, the name change was finalized and the Spotify Stars Program got a new logo. In late 2021 we had a logo design contest where Stars submitted their entries and the design with the most votes would become the new logo. The winning logo was designed by Star @Hubo and tweaked by designers at Spotify to match the brand guidelines.
