It's 2015, why is there a 10,000 song limit? Are there plans to change this?

Just wondering if there was any plans to remove the 10k song limit so I can migrate to Rdio now instead of later. It's 2015, why on earth is this even an issue?  

I've been a premium member for 3 weeks and I've already at 800 tracks so I'll be at 10k in no time. Thanks in advance!

I don't think it's stated anywhere as to why but there actually is a suggestion on Spotify Ideas to increase this limit. You can support it here if you want.

Just out of curiosity, how do you even get playlists with 10.000+ songs? Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just honestly surprised that this is even an issue for people. I don't have a single playlist that is getting even remotely close to 1000 songs - and I do listen to a lot of music. I find it much more convenient to have smaller playlists grouped in folders. Is there any advantage in using huge playlists that I'm not seeing?

In my case those large lists come from converting my whole listening history on Last.fm to several Spotify playlists with Ivy and also from exporting other specialised Last.fm lists like loved tracks or personal tag radios which contain several thousand tracks each.

I'm also using playlist folders for them to group them accordingly, but e.g. in the current web player you neither can see these folders nor use shuffle playback for them, so it is better to have one large playlist played in shuffle mode in this case.

Last but not least from moderating Last.fm forums I know that there are indeed users who have very large local file libraries managed e.g. by iTunes with 100k or more tracks which they want to use elsewhere, too, i.e. either with Last.fm or Spotify. It seems that Spotify devs/managers do not understand this or have chosen to neglect it.

I have a question about the 3333/device limit.

This all refers to just one single device:

Say I have 2 playlists set as Available Offline:  "Playlist-A" and "Playlist-B"

Both playlists happen to have a song that is the same, say "Song-X"

So does "Song-X" count as 1 song or 2 songs toward my 3333 limit?

In my case, I rarely make use of playlists. I generally like playing a shuffle of all the songs in my library. I use spotify to listen to music at work, in the car, at home, etc. I like my mix of music to be varied and eclectic. Playlists of limited length lead to more frequent repeats, which I prefer to avoid.

Also, I just don't have the time (or desire) to try to curate a bunch of different playlists. When I am in the mood to listen to a set of songs from a particular artist or genre, I'll just play an album or one of the radio stations.

With a 10,000 song limit, I always have to worry about removing songs from my library when I find new music that I like, or I want to add some older songs that I've missed before.

I have actually started a new trial with Google play music, due to this limitation.  There are many features on Spotify I love, but the library size limit is not one of them.  I have rebuilt my library in Google Play music and then some (10,512 songs in library).

As a music lover with a wide taste of music, I like the ability to shuffle my entire library rather then attempting to make a station that would miss bands that I like.

If all you want is "Shuffle play" on your "Whole library", you can already do that in 1.0.14--

Just by putting all of your playlists in one "Folder"-- and then Click on the "Folder" and then Click on "Play" when your Shuffle icon is turned on and "green".

Nothing complicated.

I considered moving to Google Play for this very reason. Unfortunately Google Play has a far worse limitation - 1,000 song max playlists (see this thread for tons of people complaining about this).

I have several playlists with far more than 1,000 songs, but only my entire library has more than 10,000, so I decided to stick with the lesser of two evil's with Spotify's limitation.

It's really too bad users are forced to deal with these limitations with any "all you can eat" streaming service. I would assume as more users listen to more music over time, this will continue to be a much larger issue.

Yes it does.  You just go to my My Library -> Songs and then click on Shuffle (Shuffle All in the mobile app).

In Spotify, you can do this too by a similar action:  You Music -> Songs -> Play, turn shuffl on.

I rarely use playlists.  I only have a few that are important to me that are more lasered in focused (holiday music, music all by the same song writer, ect).  Also, I have used playlists for parties and gatherings.  So playlist limitation is not as a big deal to me, personally.

I like the ability to shuffle through my entire library without having to rely on a system's algorithm for playing music thatI like.  It is really hard for "stations" to play what like due to my wide range in tastes.  My usual listening flow goes kinda like this:

1. Shuffle play through library
2. Song plays that gets me in the mood for a particular album
3. I listen to album
4. Go back to shufffle play through library

Also, even though Google play has a playlist size limit, you can shuffle play songs from your library by genre.  The genre gets pretty specific too.  I personally find this a better way to group large amount of songs together rather than manually having to make the playlist yourself.

I am still not sure what I am going to do.  I have been a Spotify user and champion for years.  I love the social aspects of it, but to be honest most of my friends do not take advantage of them.

You don't mind the Repeats before the whole Library is played that Shuffle gives you?  Google's Shuffle gives you Repeats just as often, but you don't mind, @soulbait?

@rednblu I have only been using Google Play Music for the past week.  I have not had any repeats yet, that I can remeber.  Looking at my song play count, very few have more than 1 and the ones that do, are because they were from me playing an album more than once.

At the end of the month, I may feel different, but for now now it is giving me everything I want.

Hey everyone

Since it doesnt appear Spotify will be increasing this limit any time soon, I created a new "Idea" on how that can at least improve upon how it handles reaching the 10,000 limit. As many of you have mentioned here, the lack of indication you've reached the limit and the fact Spotify still lets you add songs to Your Music / Playlists once caps have been reached is super frustrating. On top of that ive seen issues where after reaching the 10,000 limit, songs go missing shortly after.

I totally agree with this!! If i knew there was this small of a limit i wouldve never got this app. I thought it was "unlimited" music. I wasted my time organizing and trying to collect song together just to find out I actually am limited. Once i get my listed out someway im going to switch over to Itunes Music.

Just putting out there that I am switching to Apple Music because of this limit. Figure the only way I can make my displeasure woth Spotify known. Really my sole issue with the service.
