Linux Spotify client 1.x now in stable

In June 2015 we released version 1.x of the client for Linux in the testing repository.

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotify-Community-Blog/Spotify-Client-1-x-beta-for-Linux-has-been-r...

The intention was to fix a few of the bigger issues and then quickly move this to stable. That never happened, since after September, we have had no developers working on the linux client. There are still lots of problem with this version of the client for linux, but we are now seeing much more problems with the old client.

Known linux specific issues in 1.0.23

Most of these we want to fix, but others (like missing tray icon) we probably won't. Link to threads with more issues you have and I will try to add them here. If you can't find your issue already reported, create a new thread and follow this troubleshooting guide for linux.

From now on, the idea is to first release a client to the testing repository as soon as possible, when it is ready internally, then after a week or so if we haven't discovered any serious new crash bug that affects lots of users, it will move to stable. Most of the time, a new linux release will have no linux specific changes, only the changes it shares with the mac and win clients.

Stable repository

To install a client from the stable repository follow the instructions on https://www.spotify.com/download/linux/

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886
echo deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client

Testing repository

To install a client from the testing repository, follow the same instructions, but replace the word stable with testing.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886
echo deb http://repository.spotify.com testing non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client

What is the error message that apt-key will fail with? Which distribution are you running and which version?

The instructions should be enough, but they have only been tested with Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04 and Debian Jessie.

apt-add-repository is available only on Ubuntu so that doesn't work on Debian.

From reading the man page for apt-add-repository my understanding is that apt-add-repository does the steps 1. and 2. from the instructions in https://www.spotify.com/download/linux/

The best option would be the one that Dropbox uses. It installs the key and repository in a postinst script when the downloaded .deb package is installed.

Any changes in the Linux client specifically in 1.0.29? 🙂

Stable? Stable what? A Stable piece of **bleep**? GO **bleep** yourself, Spotify Devs.

What's the changelog for the new Spotify 1:1.0.29.92.g67727800-21 update?

It looks like they are now using their new Circular font.

Sadly you only support apt-get distributions. Could you please support other platforms as well? I am used to find .bin-Files which install themselfes for proprietary software.

I am using void-Linux and FreeBSD and there it is tricky do get spotify to run.

Thanks a lot

I'm using spotify on Ubuntu, and I think it works ok! It's a shame though that "Linux specific changes" won't be implemented...

Hopefully you can find someone who can work on some of these Linux features aswell and give your Linux customers some more love!

Stay cool!

FWIW, in KDE (Kubuntu), a similar trick to get Spotify to launch with a tray icon is to run "ksystraycmd spotify". It will then launch in the systray, and you can minimise/maximise it by clicking the systray icon (but don't click the close icon in spotify's main window).

Turns out that was just the workaround to play a new track, pausing the currently playing one before using OpenUri on a new one. Anyway your workaround only plays the album. No way to play an artist.

It seems we have a new regression already. Since 1.0.29, Pause/Stop before playing send a track to OpenUri like this won't make it start playing:

dbus-send --print-reply --dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.spotify /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Stop && dbus-send --print-reply --dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.spotify /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.OpenUri string:spotify:track:70uJN3bkYoFdIBIFnsBTeZ

New regression: spotify 1.0.31.56 segfaults when there is no pulseaudio installed. Previous versions work fine without pulseaudio and I hope so that next one will work too.

Please add more info to this thread which tracks this specific issue:

Kernel version, distro, library versions, etc?

For some reason I seem to be stuck on 1.0.28.89.gf959d4ce. I am on Ubuntu 16.04, I removed Spotify and reinstalled it and I am still on the same version. Software Update says I'm up to date but there are newer versions of Spotify available. How do I update?

You are stuck on 1.0.28.89 because that is still the version in the stable channel. Running from stable is recommended and is the one that is mentioned on https://www.spotify.com/download/linux/

To install a version from the testing channel, just follow the instructions on that page, but replace the word stable with testing. A version in testing is moved to stable after a few days, unless we have found some annoying bug that I think could be fixed.

On Mageia 6 (development version) it was pretty easy to install last Spotify using alien to convert it to rpm, thank you 🙂

Hello everyone. I've been told to post here so, could anyone please take a look at https://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Windows-Web/Spotify-crashes-on-start-Linux-Mint-...? Thanks.

I tried everything I could - I am no guru, just barely competant to be let out of Windows alone. I could not make the 1.x version(s) work on my old Ubuntu 12:04 .

Reinstalling spotify-client-0.9.17 required no effort and now I have my Premium Spotify back again.

To be honest, I had no problems with this old version so I'm as happy as a pig in muck to have it back.

Would be nice though if Spotify could find a place for a Linux expert. For some reason when I tell people that I use Linux, they think I'm some sort of computer wizard so when I say Spotify stopped working, they take note.

Spotify! From June 2015 you removed the tray icon and have not yet added it back!

The tray icon is how a lot of users prefer to control the playback, instead of switching from the current window to a giant Spotify window!

Can you please tell me how many Linux users are you ignoring?

It is hard to say. I think it is at least a few hundred from glancing complaints in these forums, reddit threads and comment sections to blog posts about the linux clients. At most a few thousands. There are not that many that use the native desktop client for linux.

For that reason I stay with the old version of Spotify client
