Connecting to Chromecast from Windows Desktop Client

When I want to use spotify connect to connect to my chromecast, I need to use my android phone/tablet versionn of spotify to connect first, then take over that connect session from my desktop client. It's imposible to directly connect to the chromecast from my desktop client 

Steps to reproduce the issue:

1. Start Spotify on phone
2. Connect to my Chromecast
3. Start Spotify on my desktop. It automaticly connects to the connect session between my phone and Chromecast
4. Kill Spotify on phone
5. Use desktop client to control Chromecast

What steps you’ve tried already:

No devices are shown in the "choose device to play to" button on desktop client. Chromecast is found on phone

Your device and operating system (e.g. MacBook Air, 10.10 OSX)

Windows 10 I7 based computer / Samsung S6 android smartphone

Type of Spotify account you have (Free/ Premium):

Premium

The app version of Spotify you’re using:

1.0.15.133.gf21970bd

Sorry I was replying to IngvarOrn about it being a problem with Windows and not Spotify.

You can play Spotify from Windows but it is **bleep** compared to the proper
Spotify player that you get when you start Spotify from your phone and
stream it to Chromecast. I have a smart phone now so I stream from
there. I gave up on casting directly from Windows long ago and am
surprised this chat keeps on going because clearly Spotify doesn't care
about Windows only users. I also pay for membership and can now download
my music to my phone to play in the car. I am sorry for those that don't
have a smart phone and are only working in Windows but I don't think you
have much hope. Remember, if you have any access to a smart phone you
can start the proper Spotify player from a smartphone. Windows Spotify
will then allow you to cast to the Chromecast. That is it will appear in
the device list of Spotify in Windows on your PC and it is a very good
player, suitable for a 5.1 sound system (and it's the same from a
Smartphone), which is what my Chromecast is plugged into. What I find
most annoying is that Spotify keeps congratulating and awarding me for
the number of posts here when basically I and all of you are deeply
critical of their lack of support for Windows only users. I am
conflicted though because what I am telling you is 'I'm alright Jack'
and have sucommed to using a smart phone for nearly everything, after
holding out for years. In fact I use my phone much more now than my PC now.

I've decided that I'm changing to Tidal before my next spotify payment. I'm sick of this **bleep** software for three reasons:

- No casting from windows app (without smartphone workaround)

- No parental guidance option

- Click on an artist and select all songs, it doesn't display anywhere near ALL songs from said artist

Those three things are enough for me to chuck the towel in on this POS software. I would move back to Google Music if it was supported by my Denon system but it's not 😞 Tidal here I come!

I have two Chromecasts on the same wifi network and I cannot play the same music on both, or indeed, use the same app on both. Chromecasts are themselves web browsers, they are not receiving the music from your desktop or mobile, just the instructions on which URLs to use (plus control info in some cases). Even if you were able to use both Chromecasts together, they would never synchronise. This is not specifically a Spotify issue.

I don't remember the sequence to setting up groups in the Chromecast Audio
app.. but I believe you must create a group then put the nodes you want to
use into that group..

Then select to cast to a single node or to a selected group of nodes

I have 5 Chromecast audio nodes and 3 different group options.. works great

Yes, totally agree. It would be good to have synchronisation over several
outputs BUT I'm not sure it's easily achieved.
In fact I'm not sure it's possible (in the sense that it would require a
dedicated server etc...). Thanks, Dave

Nope.. it all works with the Chromecast Audio App..

Give eash node a name

Make group and assign any number of nodes to the group

I have groups with 2, 3 and 5 nodes..

Once you have groups any device on the wifi network can cast to any single
node or to a group

And all the node play like one big whole house sound system.. very cool..
worth the effort to get it going

You can use the windows app with chromecast and it does not require any external devices.

Step 1: Open the desktop Spotify app.

Step 2: Open the spotify web player in chrome.

Step 3: Cast from the web player and start a track.

Step 4: Confirm the desktop player now recognizes the chromecast, just as if it was casting from android or iOS already.

Step 5: Close web player and enjoy local files and Genius integration (on supported tracks) and higher quality audio from desktop app (with premium).

EDIT: I spoke too soon - no local files. The song I initially tested happened to also be on spotify.

     New Spotify Free User Here - just started using the desktop app on my Windows 10 laptop (does not have bluetooth) and now "Casting" (Spotify Connect) and listening on bluetooth earphones through my Nvidia Shield (android tv OS with bluetooth and Chromecast built-in). So casting does work in this setup and works great. Sounds Awesome! 

   I've switched the tv back to the cable box to watch the game and the music is still playing on my Shield !!! 😉

Good news!

You can now find Chromecast in the connect "devices available" menu in the Spotify desktop app and browser web player. Now you can cast your music to Chromecast from the desktop app without having to use the iOS or Android app.

Make sure your Spotify desktop app is up to date
