2024 updated Fix, Go to your Add or Remove programs in your settings. Click "Advanced Options" then at the bottom Click "Repair". Worked For me EZ fix.

I'm having this problem. I've tried all the solutions in this thread and nothing works. The browser version plays fine but the app gives the "Spotify cannot play this right now" error.

Welcome to the Spotify Community, @triplethreat23!

Could you try the following:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Sound Control Panel, switch to the Communications tab and set "When Windows detects communications activity" to Do nothing.
  2. Head back to the Playback tab, then right-click your audio output device and select Properties. In the new window that pops up, switch to the Advanced tab and untick "Exclusive Mode" + "Enable audio enhancements".

It's also worth updating/reinstalling your sound drivers, if you haven't already. This article has some additional troubleshooting steps you can try, feel free to check it out as well.

Hope this helps!

I've been having the same problem for a week since I updated Windows. Figured out I could play some podcasts, but not all and no music. Tried a few minor changes like clean cache. What worked was going to the control panel, Sound, all sound devices, properties, and under "advanced settings" Audio Enhancements was set to "Device Default Effects" and I changed it to OFF and it WORKED!!!

I've tried the steps you outlined as well as the steps in the article and I still can't get anything to playback using the Desktop app.

I'm having the same problem with spotify desktop app not playing any songs or my local files, we pay for this app and I'm that close to stop using it if this carries on, I need music to get me through life and this is not helping me.

I can't find the setting for sound quality.

The weird thing is:: I can't play spotify on my computer, but phone and web-player function perfectly.

i can't find any solution for this problem i have tried almost everything,

I have tried

Reinstalled the app both from spotify page and from microsoft store

Restart Spotify

Turn off crossfade

Clear cache on your device

Lower the streaming quality

Disable hardware acceleration

Restart my computer

Done a ''network recovery''

Connecting different headset and changing output to it then changing back

Updating my drivers

And i have tried more stuff

the only place it doesn't work is the app i can play on web and phone

Please help

I suddenly have the same issue.  It works on every other device I have tried.  I worked through all the solutions offered here and other places and I am stumped as to what to try next.  I am on Windows 11 and it happened within the last month

" Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it."

I receive this message when I try to play ANY music in my Spotify Library on my desktop computer. I can play music through Spotify on my laptop and iphone.

Me aparece lo mismo, pero no se como solucionarlo, desinstale la app y nada, solo puedo escuchar en mi dispositivo móvil y no en mi laptop

My PC upgraded to Windows 11 and that solved this issue for me.

Hi All, I cannot play MUSIC via Spotify. Podcasts/audiobooks work fine as usual. But when I try to play any music track I get the "Spotify is unable to play this now, if you have a local file you can upload it" message. I have deleted the app and reinstalled it (From Microsoft store), I've reset the quality level. No joy. Is anyone else having the same issue, with MUSIC only?

Update: Audiobooks DO NOT work, Only PODCASTs.

Windows 11 Pro, Downloaded Spotify App Spotify for Windows (64 bit)
1.2.55.235.g5eaa0904

I have tried everything listed above in people's replies.  Nothing works.  Yesterday, I discovered that if I logged in onlne and then chose "Web player (Chrome)", it would work

Can we get a step by step?

1) Uninstall Spotify.

Done.

This solution worked for my Windows 11 pc.

I went to the Settings app>System>Sound. Then I scrolled all the way down to "More sound settings". (Clicking this opens the Control Panel for Sound.) I clicked on my speakers (the device that wasn't working for me), went to the "Advanced" tab, and clicked on "Restore Defaults", then "Apply" in the bottom right corner.

Secondly, I once again went to the Settings app>System>Sound, but I tapped on "Volume mixer". Here, I pressed "Reset sound devices and volumes for all apps to the recommended defaults".

It was after this second procedure that I stopped getting the error on Spotify, so perhaps the first one wasn't necessary.

Cheers
