[Desktop] Option if Spotify links should open native Spotify app or Webplayer

Seems like Spotify keeps pushing this issue aside because not enough people are complaining about it. I've actually seen a good amount of posts on the community boards about it but none of them seem to have gained traction with the powers that be, claiming its a non-issue and the post gets closed. I disagree, wholeheartedly.

Please bring this option back! I don't use the web player... ever. And, I don't want to now have to start copying and pasting the links into spotify app. Call me lazy. The advanced settings used to have the option to have links open in the desktop app. But that option has recently disappeared. Seems like a very obvious and useful feature, and just strange to suddenly remove that functionality.

My friends and I are always trading spotify links via text and emails and it's incredibly frustrating that it now doesn't automatically open in the desktop app like it used to. If I say pretty please, with a link to a cherry on top, would you consider this a legitimate request?

Hey folks,

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions on this one.

You should now have the option to open song links directly in the Spotify app!

Cheers 🙂

Alright Spotify, this is getting old. It's clearly a major issue for those that know about it; give us a clean answer and at least have the guts to tell us you wont fix it with the likely reason that you get ad revenue when the web player is opened by us. If I'm wrong about that, then shame on me.

@jrham I don't think they get add revenue, they just like to be the most annoying company ever, I remember back in 2013 (?) you could post songs on your feed (wow) and they didn't bother to add a delete button ahahah I mean, they are just lazy, this company is destined to fail in the future, such a shame

I feel like Spotify is, like with so many other things they don't give a toss about (hello, Chromecast skipping), filing this into the "we can't be stuffed and we'll just ignore you" bin. I cannot stress how damn annoying I find this "feature" (it's a bug guys!) - please bring back the option to open in the app. Having this issue on both Windows 10 and macOS 11 and it'd be nice to know a company listens to its paying users.

While not a solution on Spotify's end, there is a Google Chrome Extension which facilitates this, at least between Chrome and the Spotify Desktop App! But... it would still be great if it was integrated in the app.

There is also a port of Open Spotify Desktop for Firefox

Thank you so much for doing this; my music people and I are very very happy that this was implemented. Big game changer for us!

"The option"?

How would a link have an option? If people share links to songs, can we be sure those open in our apps?

jrham

My thought was that there would be a toggle on the desktop app where you could select how you want links to behave when you click on them. For instance, "When clicking on a song link, should Spotify open the song in the desktop or the web player". I actually don't see that option anywhere, but its at least its automatically changed for so that the links open in my desktop player so I'm happy at least. Can anyone confirm how to toggle how the links work if you can even do so?
