[All Platforms] Organize Liked Songs by genre

I like the new update where you can save music into the "Liked Songs" group where it sorts music by song, album, and artist. There should also be another filter: Genre. I listen to all different genres but there are times when I want to listen to only one type of music.

Hey, team!

You'r following a right way from my point of view. But I have one suggestion to improve your service as I see it. Well, It will be nice to have ability to filter a list of the songs I've marked as liked. (by music genres, artists, search query etc) then I can run this play list. It will be nice to see that kind of music (from my liked list) that is relevant to my mood or something.

I wanted this feature as well and took the time to implement it using the Spotify API.

It's not as good as if Spotify would support it, but I've used it to great success so far.

The application is freely available at https://github.com/BenediktAlkin/SongTaggerForSpotify

It supports adding tags to songs, creating playlists from one or multiple tags and also combining playlists with many other operations (filter by artist, filter untagged songs, combine playlists, ...). A demonstration of how to use it can be found here https://youtu.be/TM9wBnZ6so4

Please vote for the below to fix the poor UI library layout with only 'followed Artists' visible.

Regarding Genre’s on the Apple App if you go to your “liked songs playlist” which is built as you add songs by liking them, you will find a list along the top of “Genre Filters” if you do not have a song within a particular genre, then that genre will not appear. I tested this by noting that I did not have any genres for “Classical” so I added “The Rite of Spring” as a favourite song, then came out of the “Liked Songs Playlist”, went back in and saw that a genre called “Classical” had appeared. So behind the scenes, in the metadata, all songs must be already categorised by their genre.

This means that adding organise your collection by Genres as well as the existing “by Artist” or “by Album”would be fairly easy for Spotify to do. So come on guys, get with the program…

If you are talking about this feature:

https://newsroom.spotify.com/2021-02-25/how-to-sort-your-favorite-songs-with-spotifys-new-genre-and-...

It is not out in all countries jet. At least not in my country.

Also there are apps like http://organizeyourmusic.playlistmachinery.com/ which use the spotify api to get genre information and more for years now.

It's not that spotify cannot do it, they just don't want to do it. They do not want you to listen to your own library, they want you to listen to what they tell you. Things like filters and sorting options are behind the 3 dots at the top and not directly in the playlists on the mobile app. They took out the ability to group your library by artist and album. Instead you only find the artists and albums you followed/liked in the respective menues. Half of the start screen on the mobile app is taken up by podcasts even though i never listened to podcasts and don't care for them.

Spotify nowadays is more like an advanced radio. They give very good suggestions about what you might like to listen too, but they make everything so that you listen to what they suggest to you most of the time.

If you want to listen to music in your library nothing beats apple music, where you can change metadata of the songs in your library, group by genre, select what information you want to see in a playlist (like genre, year etc.) on the desktop app and make smart playlists.

Thank you so much for this, I will investigate your recommendations.

They don’t want me to listen to my own libraries - it’s like a radio, yes, you are so right.

I am following well over a thousand artists, and like my physical collection, I want to group those into genres as I could with iTunes around version 6 and a lot else besides. Apart from the obvious logic of doing that, I may not want to listen to a moving wave of **bleep** music that is “current” being pushed at me daily covered in AutoTune…

Once again thanks for excellent suggestions and take it easy

Gonna try out apple music 4 months for free, if spotify is only a radio platform and not a music library i think i'm better of with apple music ! I've being patient, but spotify does not adapt or brings new features for the music lovers.

Blutarsky

You sound like an Apple employee who has been payed to throw bad reputation on Spotify, which luckily is beating Apple Music hands down on every aspect.

rikverstraete

blutarsky, i can assure you that i'm not, i'm just dissapointed in the fexibility of Spotify to let each user manage it's own music libary. I used itunes in the past, because i could have smart playlist based on genre, year, mood... You can make a new flexible playlist based on the parameters you want, you can edit all the tags of the music like you want. Even if the majority of users is satisfied with the pre made playlist of spotify, adding extra features for a smaller group will attract and keep alle customers happy. These features don't interfer with the functionality of that majority, they are just extra's people can use, who care more for a real 'own' music library !
