[Desktop][Playlists] Add density slider for UI display

With every update the density is decreased in the desktop app. The most recent update to turn the desktop app into the web app has made it even worse.

More now than ever we need a density option to increase display density and turn off album art per line in playlists.

This has been suggested before and closed despite lots of votes, but it really needs to be considered now. This is an absolute deal breaker for my continued subscription to your service.

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that a Compact mode which hides the album art and displays the song's title and artist under two separate columns in playlists and albums is now available on the desktop app and the Web Player! Check out @MattSuda's post here for a detailed overview.

The way tracks are listed now is utterly ridiculous. There's absolutely zero need for a single track to take up two to three times the vertical space one used to... and all for what, so you can show me the **bleep** album art for the track? And then they have the audacity to remove the artist from it's own dedicated column and sideline it below the track title... Also, give me back my f'ing search bar.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Spotify gets worse EVERY SINGLE TIME any aspect of the UI is touched. Can we not just go back to the native interface from the original beta era please?

I just can't stand the new UI on desktop - ridiculous to have artist and title stacked, and the album covers on every song so now I can only see 6 songs at a time in my playlists (and it seems to slow my computer down a lot now). I've gone from using the desktop app 8+hrs a day at work to using YouTube playlists instead (also hardly ideal). Anyone have good suggestions for desktop music apps with decent UI? Apple Music seems fine, but does it have the same songs as Spotify?

This is a really good suggestion.  It would satisfy both the "Form" crowd and the "Function" crowd.   I'm with the "Function" crowd myself, but this would also allow someone to make the UI even more sparsely populated if they wish. 🙂

Only two more votes left for Live Idea!

Good news!

There is now a new Compact Mode for track lists (playlists and album pages) in the desktop app and Web Player

The drop down menu now has "Sort by" and "View as" options. To turn on compact mode, open up the drop down menu at the top right of a playlist or album page and click on "Compact" under "View as".

On Playlist pages, it removes the album art, and breaks out "Title" and "Artist" into their own separate columns again. This view is similar to before the redesign that added album art into playlists a few years ago.

On Album pages, it moves the artist and featured artists from below each track title, to a new "Artist" column to the right of the "Title" column.

When you turn on Compact Mode, it will be remembered and stay on when you are viewing both playlists and album pages. You can switch back to the regular "List" view at any time.

The new Compact Mode for track lists is rolling out in the desktop app and Web Player right now so you should be seeing it soon. This has been a highly requested feature since the redesign came out a few years ago.
