[Desktop] Toggle the display of album covers in playlists

UPDATE: thank you all who supported the idea! A clean UI is a happy UI, hopefully we will have to option to clean ours up very soon

Please give us the ability to decide if you want album covers toggled on or off in a playlist. In the current look they takes up so much unnecessary space and it would be nice to just be able to set them to 'do not display'.

I am aware this will be marked as a duplicate of this idea but that was 2 months ago and is now closed.

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that a Compact mode which hides the album art and displays the song's title and artist under two separate columns in playlists and albums is now available on the desktop app and the Web Player! Check out @MattSuda's post here for a detailed overview.

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better by participating here on the Community 💚

Yes I wish there was an option to go back to the previously more condensed display. I keep a playlist I'm constantly updating that currently has 660+ songs. It's a lot of scrolling.

I like the part when you mention that we should have a say in how our interface looks; hit the nail on the head!

It would also be great to have an option to have a mini player, with skins possibly, or even the album art as the skin, changing with every song/album. This way the app would not take up most of the laptop screen space when I'm working from home - a reality more and more common theses days - and I would be able to keep the app up so I can use the space bar to pause songs to answer team calls or do video calls. It would be a much appreciated feature.

Hi dev team, its been more then 2 years, what's been happening? @Xenia

MattSuda

Good news!

There is now a new Compact Mode for track lists (playlists and album pages) in the desktop app and Web Player

The drop down menu now has "Sort by" and "View as" options. To turn on compact mode, open up the drop down menu at the top right of a playlist or album page and click on "Compact" under "View as".

On Playlist pages, it removes the album art, and breaks out "Title" and "Artist" into their own separate columns again. This view is similar to before the redesign that added album art into playlists a few years ago.

On Album pages, it moves the artist and featured artists from below each track title, to a new "Artist" column to the right of the "Title" column.

When you turn on Compact Mode, it will be remembered and stay on when you are viewing both playlists and album pages. You can switch back to the regular "List" view at any time.

The new Compact Mode for track lists is rolling out in the desktop app and Web Player right now so you should be seeing it soon. This has been a highly requested feature since the redesign came out a few years ago.

@MattSuda thanks so much to the team at Spotify for bringing this back! The combined artist and track was a huge issue for me with visibility and this will be such a quality of life improvement for me as I use Spotify every day. Just wanted to express appreciation for this 🙂
