Remove the ridiculous monthly limit to lyrics and Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.

FIRST OF ALL WHY DO WE HAVE A MONTHLY LIMIT TO LYRICS? AND WHY ON THE WEBSITE DO YOU HAVE TO BUY PREMIUM??? THIS IS RIDICULOUS! WHAT IS THE POINT? NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN ALSO JUST GOOGLE THE LYRCIS AND IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE LYRICS IN REAL TIME USE YOUTUBE I SWEAR SPOTIFY IS SO DUMB AND MONEY HUNGRY AT THIS POINT (VOTE SO SPOTIFY CAN GET RID OF THIS)

Update: now that I look back at it… LYRICS ARE A ACCESSIBILITY FEATURE WHICH IS MEANT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE HARD OF HEARING OR ARE DEAF. THIS IS THE SAME CONCEPT AS PUTTING A MONTHLY LIMIT TO CAPTIONS AND PUTTING CAPTIONS BEHIND A PAY WALL WHICH IS RIDICULOUS. SPOTIFY FIX YOUR APP AND WEBSITE AND TAKE BETTER NOTES. (BTW THEY DONT EVEN SHOW THE “THERES A MONTHLY LIMIT TO LYRICS” POP UP ANYMORE, IT JUST SAYS “There’s a monthly limit to lyrics (show lyrics)” LIKE HUH??? (IF YOU STILL DONT KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT CHECK THE 3RD PHOTO!)

KEEP VOTING SO SPOTIFY CAN REMOVE THIS!

Like COMON SPOTIFY. This is actually ridiculous. Yall could’ve just taken away the feature entirely but no- yall gave a MONTHLY LIMIT. SIT DOWN SPOTIFY. AINT NOBODY THINK YOU SANE. Like imagine taking away peoples right to read😍😍 It’s literally condescending. Spotify needs to get a grip🙄

Congratulations, @kalimo,

You’ve won the most ridiculous overreaction  award on this thread. Spotify has taken away your right to read. And for that matter apparently your ability to right to keep a firm grip on reality and how capitalism works.

Good luck to you in this crazy world friend.

@Mitre226644,

That indeed is good news, with more revenue it's a win-win for both Spotify and the free users(less incentive for paywalls 😅). Hopefully this continues, knock on wood, but I suppose it remains to be seen how much layoffs had a role in this. I'll look into this more when I have time. Do keep me updated on this!

It amounts to about $250 million. It really is a crummy situation because a lot of those who were fired were responsible for bringing the company to the stage of prosperity it achieved by the end of the year. It's all about profit to the shareholders, though, so I suppose that comes with the territory.

StopBeingCheapSpotfy

SPOTIFY. PLEASE. Stop being so cheap and get rid of all these basic features locked behind a stupid paywall.

With all the changes I don't think they even check this site anymore. Bad call after bad call, someone completely clueless is now in charge. I'm already researching other streaming services, Spotify is just cheap now. Cheap to their artists, cheap to their users.

An excerpt from correspondence I have begun with Spotify:

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, Closed Captioning (of which lyrics displayed in the app in real time are a logical extension) is mandated in "Places of public accommodation." According to the ruling in National Association for the Deaf v Netflix, entities that provide streaming content online are considered places of public accommodation and are therefore required to provide access to captioning for streamed media. This ruling - that all users of a service should have equitable access - is reinforced in the cases American Council of the Blind (ACB) v Netflix and ACB v Hulu.

I am sending a copy of the entire initial contact to the National Association for the Deaf and the Department of Justice, Office of Civil Rights. Making my daughter cry has consequences.

I love this idea! I'm a Spotify free version user and part of my Spotify experience is reading the lyrics as I listen. It just isn't the same without it! Your idea of making the synced lyrics for premium is brilliant because we free users can read the lyrics and the premium users get the hands-free, oddly satisfying to watch synced lyrics. It would be a good way for Spotify to get more people to buy premium too because they'd first think about how they loved the synced lyrics and consider maybe trying premium for a while then remember other perks and maybe decide to get premium. It's a win-win-win! Win for Spotify, win for premium users, and still a win for free users.

@ash,

Thanks for the update. I have been researching this as well.

My conclusion is that this situation is extremely convoluted because there has been no formal legislation regarding compliance for music streaming, and there are all sorts of nuances that makes this tricky to legislate in the first place.

In addition, the advocacy groups such as the one that participated in the Netflix lawsuit, need substantial financial backing in order to take a huge company to court, and I think that they obtained it because there was a clearer path to victory and longstanding implementation of closed captioning for television and movies.

This is not a fact, but a theory I have- I think entities like Spotify and others are waiting for there to be actual laws to exist and make all of the appropriate modifications. I am sure, like countless other sites, they have followed recommendations given by the WCAG.

Lastly, a company like Spotify likely has a football team full of rockstar lawyers who are all over this, so they are probably confident in what they're doing. I think you're doing a good deed by questioning this and actually putting in effort so we all know instead of merely shouting in the community about what you think about it and making the moderators pull their hair out.

Thanks,

blandboy

Imagine hiding a accessibility feature behind a paywall. Corpo scum. I hope both sides of all your pillows are warm and moist.
