I love this idea! I'm a Spotify free version user and part of my Spotify experience is reading the lyrics as I listen. It just isn't the same without it! Your idea of making the synced lyrics for premium is brilliant because we free users can read the lyrics and the premium users get the hands-free, oddly satisfying to watch synced lyrics. It would be a good way for Spotify to get more people to buy premium too because they'd first think about how they loved the synced lyrics and consider maybe trying premium for a while then remember other perks and maybe decide to get premium. It's a win-win-win! Win for Spotify, win for premium users, and still a win for free users.

@ash,

Thanks for the update. I have been researching this as well.

My conclusion is that this situation is extremely convoluted because there has been no formal legislation regarding compliance for music streaming, and there are all sorts of nuances that makes this tricky to legislate in the first place.

In addition, the advocacy groups such as the one that participated in the Netflix lawsuit, need substantial financial backing in order to take a huge company to court, and I think that they obtained it because there was a clearer path to victory and longstanding implementation of closed captioning for television and movies.

This is not a fact, but a theory I have- I think entities like Spotify and others are waiting for there to be actual laws to exist and make all of the appropriate modifications. I am sure, like countless other sites, they have followed recommendations given by the WCAG.

Lastly, a company like Spotify likely has a football team full of rockstar lawyers who are all over this, so they are probably confident in what they're doing. I think you're doing a good deed by questioning this and actually putting in effort so we all know instead of merely shouting in the community about what you think about it and making the moderators pull their hair out.

Thanks,

blandboy

Imagine hiding a accessibility feature behind a paywall. Corpo scum. I hope both sides of all your pillows are warm and moist.

Just like Pandora DOESN'T!!😡 Their lyrics are free as they should be as they are 1/2 of a song IMHO❣️

Spotify just make the app paid already if you're so money thirsty to make the ONLY THING THAT ISN'T PAID - LYRICS, A PREMIUM THING. (besides listening to music because the only thing that's left is to make a limit for music) Sooo disappointed, you don't realize how much less enjoyable your app is now, literally over A BILLION PEOPLE MAYBE MORE USE YOUR APP AND ENOUGH PEOPLE REPURCHASE AND PAY FOR PREMIUM EVERYDAY. LITERALLY ALMOST EVERYTHING IS PAID AND USERS WHO DON'T HAVE PREMIUM BASICALLY CAN'T USE THE APP NOW!!!!

Even if the ADA or NAD or whoever can't take Spotify to court for some reason, I wonder if a class action lawsuit is an option. On a side note, I find it awfully strange that Spotify is paywalling a service provided by Musixmatch. Now the premium version of the Musi app offers lyric translation, word by word sync, etc, but the free version at least shows the lyrics and can show the current line of the song if wanted (sadly Musixmatch doesn't have a desktop app). Musi isn't paywalling basic accessibility (i.e. the correct thing to do), so why is Spotify? I doubt Spotify Premium is even offering translation and such.

Of course we should keep up the backlash and preferably sue because Spotify is being scummy on multiple levels, but in the meantime, we can and should absolutely find alternatives/more reasons why we shouldn't give Spotify our money (and maybe not our business either).

No because why do we have to pay to see lyrics?? Those lyrics should be free for everyone to see and use not JUST for premium. Spotify be better because no way you're making people PAY to see the lyrics.

That honestly **bleep**ing sucks to see the lyrics of a song you gotta pay for a subscription plan? Yeah no
They are just trying to squeeze users to get the subscription plan which will be just a little portion I hate Spotify doing that I want to sing as well as listen to a song now I can**bleep** I hope they change it back... But now they are facing lots of **bleep** people wanting free lyrics back because it **bleep**
