Question Of The Week : How to define a song, a voice, a style, an artist with one word?

Hey, there... It's Friday... Soon a well deserved weekend... So it's time to put your brain working for answering to our new Question Of The Week (QOTW).

When we check the Music Exchange board, it's very rare to find a playlist with an attractive or appealing description. When we ask someone : How do you feel about this song, this artist, this voice? it's very difficult to express artistic feelings. So with this QOTW:

How Would You Define what you like musically with one word?

I would like we try to build together

Our Community Music Dictionary.

Here is some examples to explain clearer what I expect as answers.

Sensual as the voice of Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star

Sweetness as the voice of Roy Orbison

spotify:track:6r20M5DWYdIoCDmDViBxuz:small

Creative as the Beatles

spotify:track:25yQPHgC35WNnnOUqFhgVR:small

Political as The Beastie Boys

spotify:track:5NLuC70kZQv8q34QyQa1DP:small

Your turn now...

Enjoy your weekend...

Thanks for starting this thread @Soundofus, such a cool topic!

One the first tunes that comes to mind is Regina Spektor's voice in Hero. I found this song when I was about 16 and I was so impressed by her raw and imperfect, yet so honestly emotionally charged performance.

So I'd say - Emotional

Since then I have discovered grunge and I do have a lot more examples of super emotional and raw vocals, but somehow Regina was one of the first to leave a mark in my head 😄

Great question, @Soundofus!

One word that I’d say describes a lot of the music that I enjoy is: Calming.

I think a good example of this is OM, a band whom I always seem to appreciate listening to for their repetitive, sometimes minimal percussion rhythms and bass grooves, as well as their mantra-like, chanted vocals. At least for me, OM's music tends to have a pleasant, almost trance-inducing effect that brings about a calm state of mind as the music gradually shifts and evolves (oftentimes over the course of 10+ minutes tracks).

Here’s probably my favorite song by OM, “At Giza” from their Conference Of the Birds album:

Such a great question! I listen to a variety of genres, and although I enjoy them all, I've realized I'm more likely to replay albums/songs with a very specific sound/emotion.

To answer your question and expand on my statement, the word I would use to define my music preference is heartfelt

Whether it's about heartbreak 💔, the ups and downs of life 😓, or love/joy 💖—when artists put their all into songs/albums and deliver heartfelt vocal performances, they really resonate with me.

Below, are three artists along their respective songs that in my opinion, define the three examples I mentioned above. If you listen to the songs, you will feel the artists emotions in every verse they sing. 💗

Inventive as the music of Radiohead.

I love this song! It was so popular in Colombia when it was first released. A worldwide smash hit. 😎

EDIT: I meant to reply to @Scoobs9, but for some reason the reply didn't work? 😅

Great song nonetheless!

Personality

This is the artist Jão, one of the most listened to current artists here in Brazil. I like his songs because of his artistic proposal, Jão has a lot of personality, an important photographer for the artist.
