what is "Offline Backup"? spotify broken in airplane mode

My Question or Issue

took a flight today, put the phone on airplane mode. saw some new playlist called "Offline Backup," 56hrs of misc music, seemingly downloaded. scrolled through it a bit, didn't add it to my library or play any of the songs. i went on to play other downloaded music and after a few minutes my Spotify crashed. It then went on to crash basically over and over, even after restarting my phone. After landing I turned off airplane mode and spotify was back to working fine, and "Offline Backup" was gone. 

Is this a new feature being tested? If so, can I get rid of it? I fear the influx of downloaded music is what caused my spotify to glitch like crazy (though maybe it was caused by something else).

This just appeared for me too on my app, with 50+ hours of music in it. Not caused me any issues as of yet but I'm unsure of it's use and implementation? This is the only mention of this feature that I've seen

I also have it, and it works great and no issue so far. I love this feature, It saves my frequently played music so I can listen to it offline or with minimal data usage while commuting.

Mine isn’t showing up anymore! I’m so bummed because it was great for my commutes where I lose connection.

Spotify is letting me listen to music i haven't downloaded, whenever i play one song then go offline that song can still be played without downloading and that would be nice but it's using up a lot of my storage because ig it thinks it is downloaded. please help 🙏
