Spotify and ITunes conflict when playing back on car stereo

I have a USB port that connects into the bottom of my iPhone 4S and plays music from my iPhone through the car stereo when I set the car stereo to "iPod".  If I start Spotify it will play the song I am currently playing but if I skip to the next song using my car stereo my iPhone gets confused and starts skipping to the next song in my iTunes musics.  Its like it can't decide whether its playing music from Spotify or iTunes music.  I've tried shutting down the ITunes music so that Spotify is the only app currently "open" but this doesn't resolve the issue.  I want to be able to just play Spotify and control Spotify using my car stereo - is this possible?

Hello.

While we try and be compatible with docks and various connectors, sadly we can't always ensure they will be compatible. Sometimes, these systems may only be configured to work with the native music application, which is why that it will open that up on your device.

If possible, ensure that the firmware is up to date on your stereo.
