Hey guys,
I wanted to share some of my Soul playlists with you and invite you to add yours too.
So what is Soul music? Here's a good description i found on about.com:
Soul music is a combination of R&B and gospel and began in the late 1950s in the United States. Soul diffirentiates from R&B due to its greater emphasis on vocalists and its merging of religious and secular themes.
The 1950s recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and James Brown are commonly considered the beginnings of soul music.
I would like to keep this thread Soul only. I have 2 playlists whihc i really like but one is Soul and Blues, the other is Soul and Jazz. I will not post those here, but maybe in another thread.
Here are mine and i'm looking forward to yours. Enjoy!

Great list Klaus! I was already following it.
Great to hear that, thanks! 🙂
Hey guys,
I created a new playlist, it's mostly soul so i post it here. I read the article on Top 100 greatest songwriters on Rolling Stone:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-songwriters
Among them i read about a songwriter called Bert Berns. I thought i had never heard of him but when i heard some of the songs he has written i have known him all my life! He wrote quite some classic Soul & Pop Songs. So i decided to dedicate this playlist to him.
Enjoy!

@Jazzwhatever you definitely have a great taste of songs for this genre. I grew up on all this type of music and man I never get tired of it. Check out my Motown playlist and let me know your thoughts.

@msalinas408 Hey thanks for the postitive feedback. Could you make another soul playlist? If you type Motown in spotify you get 100s of playlists called motown. Although i really like Motown artists as for a playlist it's not very original to call it Motown. 🙂
I think you can do better. 🙂 Just let me know when you have made a new one.
And i checked your old school funk playlist. It got some good choices, but others like michael jackson, david bowie, bill withers don't fit the list. But overall i find it a better list than the motown one. I actually really liked the oh honey track by Delegation but it's definetly no funk. 🙂 Also try to include 1 or 2 songs of 1 artists on the list, instead of more.
Goodluck out there!
Here is my playlist.
I need to change the title tho , you might find some r&b there too 🙂
I love soul also, but haven't created any specific soul playlists yet (I'm new). Your mention of Bert Berns struck a chord with me because I have been a Van Morrison fanatic since I heard him do Gloria, Baby please don't go. and Mystic Eyes in the mid-1960s. He has become infinitely more soulful as he ages.
Anyway he had a major falling out with Bert in 1967. Here is an article: http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/bert-berns-label-boss-friend-to-wiseguys-and-foe-to-van-morrison-1...
I bought a 2 CD set in the mid-90s called "Payin' Dues: primarily to replace a stolen 1967 album he (VM) made with Berns. The second CD was crazy and some of the ditties made fun of Bern. I later found out from Wiki: 'The second disc contains the notorious "Contractual Obligation" session – thirty-one improvised nonsense songs Morrison recorded in order to fulfill his contract with Bang Records. The song "Thirty Two" takes a swipe at Berns's production style...'
@ngcart Thanks for sharing that article, really interestimg! I actually ordered the book about Bert Berns, it sounded really good!
About new bands that sound like old soul groups. I haven't found them. I liked some Nu Soul like Bilal and D'Angelo, but thats more Hiphop orientated. If i were you i would search for Nu Soul in Spotify, maybe you can find something. Or create a new thread in the playlist exchange and see what people come up with?
@bojanbogdan I really liked some of the nu-soul you put in there. I think it would be better, more consistent if you made a nu-soul playlist only. Now you have added some (classic) soul tracks that everyone knows, they don't add much to the list. (i mean not very interesting for other people). I think it would be better if you focus on 1 genre, but that's up to you, goodluck 🙂
@ Jazzwhatever I've thought that something was off with my playlist but i couldn't put the finger on what ,I totally agree with what you said ! I really appreciate the advice !! 🙂
@bojanbogdan Nice to hear! I will keep an eye on the playlist then 🙂
What is Soul, although I agree it's good sometimes to genre define your playlists sometimes hard to decide what a song is straight Soul, Northern, Modern, Nu, etc. To me Soul is Funky, Funk is Soulful, Disco is has Soul and Soul is uptempo to play in Discos, House is Disco's big brother and the good stuff definitely Soulful, Hip Hop uses Soul Funk and Disco samples. In the end it all came from Soul via Rhythm and Blues. It's the greatest story ever told in my book how we've ended from Big Mama Thornton to say Trap music but what a ride and its best told through the Artists themselves..
So let's mix it all up see what comes out

Hey guys,
I have made another soul playlist. It's philly (disco) soul from the last half of the 70s. All artists in this list are inspired by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes (and there are also some songs by them in here) Enjoy:
