hm... I seriously doubt that error message is related to that you cannot play local files.
We need som more input: What os are you on, which spotify version, what kind of local files..
I get the same issue, running latest version of the linux (Spotify) version, using Debian jessie.
Edit: Trying to run .mp3 files from a podcast.
Same problem here. I am unable to play any MP3s from "local files". Spotify shows the new track, but just does not start playing it. The last message in the console is:
GAIA: current state ID updated to 1046704970
Other than that, I can see no error messages or other messages which would be different than when playing remote tracks.
This has never been working for me, which is disgusting.
(Spotify 0.9.17.1 running on Arch Linux x86_64)
Just solved my problem. Had to install the optional package ffmpeg-compat for local file playback to work. (Could tell that from the Spotify AUR package.)
