Please don't remove the current Samsung/Android Widget

I opened Spotify today to be greeted by a pop-up announcing that the current widget is going away, to be replaced with a new widget.

(I cropped out my personal playlists)

This would've been mostly fine (it's kind of ugly, it sticks out on my home screen in a bad way) except it's larger, has unnecessary/unwanted 'suggestions', and when shrunk down to 4x1, replaces the current song playing with a suggestion (in my case, a suggested Playlist of mine.)

If I wanted to listen to my "Rock ('24)" Playlist I would go into the app. This isn't "listening my way", I don't want this, and I'm sure there are others who don't want this either. I genuinely just want the current widget to remain untouched, not removed.

I don't have a problem with a new widget being added, I'm sure some people will like it, but I don't want fixed what isn't broken. Please don't remove the old/current widget.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot my home screen is 5x6 wide, so if you don't stretch the new widget out to 5x1 then it only shows the play button, no previous/skip buttons (even though all 3 buttons show when it's at 4x2 size) which is a complete downgrade from the current widget. Even worse! 😞

Updated on 2026-06-12

Hey everyone, update here.

This thread is being read by us and we want to share some helpful information

Player controls at smaller sizes: Skip and previous buttons have been added back to compact widget sizes. If you're on the latest app version, these should now be available when the widget is sized down.

Resizing to 4x1: The new widget defaults to 4x2, but it can be resized to 4x1 on most devices. You may need enough free space on your home screen to place the widget at its default size first, then long-press it and drag the handles to shrink it down. Once resized, it should give you a compact layout with player controls similar to the old widget. We know this isn't the most intuitive process and appreciate the patience.

Crashes or unresponsive controls: If the widget isn't responding to taps or won't launch the app, please share your device model, Android version, and launcher information so the team can investigate.

We appreciate you taking the time to reply here and we’ll post again if anything else changes.

The new widget is terrible. Cannot be resized to fit my screen requirements (like the old one) without losing functionality. Give us back the old widget and stop forcing us to accept mediocre designs

Great, so if i want the same functionality from the widget I have to break my home screen layout because I lose the skip buttons at the smaller size setting? Thats just swell spotify, I love how companies just continually ship slop updates with no regard for their users.  🖕

New Widget is terrible. I will be speaking alternative platforms as I use the widget all the time and I have it smaller to fit with my other essential widgets.

My Question or Issue

I am very happy with the old widget, as it is all I need, but now its making me switch to the new one. The old one says 'update your Spotify widget switch to keep s-' and that's where it cuts off.

Please being back the old widget that has the x1 row height, the new one has a minimum of x2 which sucks. I don't need those shortcuts to recently played playlists, it was perfect with just the song displayed and buttons to play/pause, next/previous track. Why does Spotify always feel the need to change things that were working perfectly before?!

Who are the idiots that come up with ideas like this and then decide to force it on people let us use the old one if we like, witch will be 90% off all users. New features and ideas are a good thing but never force users to use them.

The old widget was great! It did the basic functions I needed and was SLIM! It worked with my home screen and my layout. Now I can't go back to a slim one and can only use the larger blocky one that doesn't work for me - so now I am practically unable to use the widget and have to get into the app every single time now. What is the freaking point?!?!?

If I want to change books, or go into a different album, I would do that myself. I don't need the frickin widget to give me that option. I need it slim and with back, pause, and skip options and showing me what is playing.

I don't give a damn about the album art or changing the playlist on the home screen - that's what the app is for - not the short cuts.

This is the worst "improvement" yet and it makes me consider Amazon Music and Pandora over Spotify all over again.

Two weeks ago you have an update saying you'd "heard the criticisms" and were "working on it"

Two weeks later you've forced me to stop using the widget that works and the new one shows no signs of being fixed.

Are you deliberately trying to lose users or is there some other reason you're being so comprehensively incompetent?

As of right now on my Zenfone 8 at 5 app width, I'm unable to use the new widget at 1 height. I'm forced to use it at at least 2 high. And I have to have at least 3 wide to get access to song controls. Meaning that I need 3x2 for song controls. That's twice the minimum size of the old one. I really liked 4x1. With the old one being disabled, I likely won't be using the new widget. I hope the old one is re-enabled.

They've sort of gotten rid of the old one now. I'm not sure if it's just my phone bugging out but you can only have the old one if you also have the new one on your phone.
