Gift cards are not real monetary value

I recently received a $60 gift card for Spotify. Thankfully I was able to get my student account verified for (at this time) a $5.99 monthly subscription. 
I was very disappointed when I discovered that regardless of my subscription I still had to pay full price of my gift card for the $11.99 subscription. Making my gift card of $60 only valuable for six months when in reality it should be for at least 10 months with my student premium subscription of $5.99. I feel totally ripped off my Spotify 😕

Why do Spotify gift cards have a dollar value when in reality at redemption time it is only monthly value?
