Introducing the Spotify Miniplayer to Spotify Desktop

Amay

Hey folks!

I’m excited to introduce a new addition to the Spotify desktop experience: the Spotify Miniplayer!

Whenever I’m working, Spotify is always running in the background. I keep jumping from track to track and this means I keep switching between windows. If I have to adjust volume or change the Repeat mode, for example, I need to switch to the Spotify window. I bet that you also felt from time to time that there should be a better way to handle these controls?

Well, we got lucky! That’s what the Miniplayer is for! Looks like this nifty feature is designed to give us maximum control over our music and podcasts with minimal intrusion, ensuring the workflow goes undisturbed.

Here’s a couple of things we can expect from the new Miniplayer:

Supported Content

Whether you're into the music, podcasts, or both, the Miniplayer is your go-to. It delivers a balanced experience, catering equally to both video and music content. I really like how it takes the video podcasts out in a picture-in-picture mode with controls. I can make the video size larger or smaller based on my preference.

Discreet

I find it neat how the Miniplayer floats over other applications. I can get all the playback controls I need without getting distracted. This helps me stay focused and does not disturb my workflow.

Fluid Transition

The Miniplayer doesn't replace the main Spotify window. It's easy to switch back and forth. I can open the Miniplayer or close it without interrupting the listening experience.

I love exploring playlists and podcasts but this can easily become a distraction. One example is the time I was listening to rock music whilst replying to some emails, and I wanted to shuffle my playlist. I switched to Spotify and a few minutes later I was browsing a classical playlist. You see? It is so easy to get lost since there are a lot of amazing curated playlists.

Thanks to the Miniplayer, I can now shuffle my queue or put a song on repeat without opening the main app. I can also quickly add or remove a song or episode from my library with just one click.

Adaptable Design

It’s awesome that I can shape my space according to my own rules. I really enjoy that the Miniplayer can transform its shape into a square, rectangle, or a sleek bar. You can adjust it to any size based on the current task.

I often use the Miniplayer in a small pill size. This gives me the basic controls while maintaining the minimum visual presence. I can then close the main Spotify window but still control my music and podcasts easily.

Earlier today I was reviewing my projects. The Miniplayer was quietly sitting at the bottom left corner of my screen. It takes the minimum screen real estate while giving me a visual glimpse of what is playing and ability to quickly pause or go to the next track.

Quick Tip: You can also click the Artist name, Song name, or the Album Art to open it in the main Spotify app.

Availability

The Miniplayer is only available for Premium users just now. To use the Miniplayer, look for this icon on your desktop app:

You can find it at the bottom right corner between the volume and the full screen buttons.

I hope you have the same handy experience with the Miniplayer as I did. Maybe you will discover even more useful things. Don’t forget to share them with the rest of the Community - feel free to drop your thoughts and feedback below.

I love this feature, is nice, minimalist and so helpful. I don't need to change window or tab to change song. The only thing i think will be a good improvement is a button to see recent playlist or something. But its a good feature

I'm a premium user, yet i dont have this option on my desktop app at all... Tried to update the app - nothing. Any ideas?

Miniplayer not showing up either on win10..

Nice miniplayer.
Any hotkeys to minimize or hide/show the miniplayer in Windows?
A length and a time progress bar will be great too.
Bug report: please store the position and size of the player when you close/open Spotify. Now in Windows 11 always appears at the default position and size every time you restart Spotify

this is nice! hope sometime soon we can read the lyrics on this miniplayer, just like the MiniLyrics used to do on Windows XP! the low opacity would be cool too, transparent even! (spotify with themes hmm. So we can fix the colors of the lyrics background... that blood red kill my eyes)

thanks for the tip!

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Spotify windows app via the Microsoft store and directly via Spotify standalone installation exe and I can't get the mini player icon to show up....

I have a premium duo plan active in South Africa has this feature been made available for premium members worldwide or only for those in certain countries?

WarmishHalo

I don't see this feature, currently using the app direct from the website on Windows 11

xiaobo

I don't see this feature too

For people still not being able to see the Mini-player option like me on windows 11, downloading the Microsoft store version fixed it for me, weird how the official installation from Sportify's website seems to be less recent than the Microsoft store version

As with most things Spotify, this is a half-hearted implementation that could be much better.

1// For one thing, when I start Spotify, restoring the previous size and location would be useful.  And hiding the main interface would be good too.  I.e., if I want to start using the mini player, why not make that the default until I say differently?

2// A thinner minimized size that docks to the Windows taskbar would be helpful.  The last thing I want is a window floating over my work, but putting it down in the task bar would be a reasonable place to hide it.

While I'm at it, your search capabilities are completely incomprehensible.  Searching within playlists requires finding a different magnifying glass and only does exact matches.  I just want to know if I already have an artist or song in a given playlist.  I end up scrolling through the whole playlist out of frustration.

Here's another out of the box idea for those of us creating playlists for other timed situations.  How about a mode to show total running time into a playlist.  For example, I want to start a playlist at 2pm on the day of the eclipse and then have Dark Side of the Moon come on at 3:29pm.  Any ideas how I might do that?

And for the love of Christ, stop with the Made for Me **bleep**.  You have no idea what I listen to, so I'd rather you don't embarrass yourself by pretending you do.

I use the app on multiple Windows PCs and have a premium account, but there is no mini-view option. Also, Why did the playing queue list change from the center large view to the right-side small view? This is a terrible change as it does not show details like track time in the now small list. Please make the large queue list available again. Thank you!

Premium Family member here, no sign of this miniplayer. Tried reinstalling, on Windows

The miniplayer is great, but for some reason I cannot between windows of same app (Command + `) when it is open. When I close the miniplayer the function works again?

I am also using Stage Manager so not sure if this is related?

13 days later. Still nothing on MacBook Pro or Mac mini

I've been reinstalling and doing clean installation but my spotify desktop still doesn't have the miniplayer function. Please help

As someone mentioned earlier, placing the mini player in Windows taskbar would be a great step forward. I'm not worried about album art being there. I have noticed that if I drag the corner of the mini player to its absolutely smallest size (which I like), you can not move the player with mouse until you expand it some.  Also, it may just be me and my eyesight, but, when the mini player is first opened, it doesn't appear to be "square" or "true vertical/horizontal"; it seems sort of skewed downward on right side. At any rate, KUDOS to all that brought this feature forward!

This is an exciting update. What's missing now is the ability for the miniplayer to auto-hide when I drag it to the edge of the screen.

Also on a MacBook Pro and do not have access to this feature. Reached to Support via chat and told that it has not yet fully rolled out and to 'hang tight'.
