The Tip-off: Field Mouse

Indie dream pop + a freshly tailored shoegaze edge = Field Mouse

Last week we asked our Community for tips for The Tip-off. As soon as I saw @theartolater post ‘Field Mouse!’ I said “Yes of course!”

I first fell in love with Field Mouse in 2013 when a friend put their song “You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom” in our collaborative playlist. It’s a dreamy pop track that’s perfectly packaged to brighten your day and immediately lift you up in a glowing indie ball of happiness.

But not all of Field Mouse’s music fits into that dream pop bubble. They’ve developed a rock n’ roll edge to their latest music, including their recently released third studio LP Episodic under Topshelf Records. In fact SPIN just named Episodic as their album of the week, praising it’s shoegaze undertones and collaborative efforts with Swearin’s Allison Crutchfield, Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, and Cymbals Eat Guitars’ Joseph D’Agostino.

Founding members Andrew Futral and Rachel Browne (who together released my much loved “You Guys Are Gonna…”) have now grown to a five-piece band ready to take on grittier guitars and a darker tone. You know this album is off to a different start with “The Mirror” (think a track that was lost from Hop Along’s Painted Shut). “Out of Context” starts with a return to their original pop roots but is sliced with screeching guitars two minutes in, as Browne shows her strength as a rock leader singer to the end.

If you’re a fan of Hop Along, or my other Tip-off artist No Joy, then we highly recommend spending an afternoon with Field Mouse.
