[Tutorial] Finding Friends - All Methods!

Introduction

With the Spotify social system, it is amazingly easy to share content with your friends which is great! But sometimes it can be a bit tricky to find and follow your friends in the first place especially if you or your friend is not connected to Facebook. This tutorial serves as a quick "How-To" find and follow your friends in Spotify!

Contents

1. Both you and your friend are connected to Facebook (and are friends on Facebook!)

2. You or your friend is connected to Facebook, or you are not Facebook friends.

Both you and your friend are connected to Facebook (and are friends on Facebook!)

Sending tracks to friends

This makes finding, following and sharing with your friends really really easy!

If you want to share a track, album, artist or playlist with a Facebook friend just right click on the item and select "Share...".

Once you get the share dialogue, press "Send to Friend" (or you can post to a feed if you like!!) and then start typing your friends name in the first box. You should get him or her offered as a suggestion below, click on that to complete the box! Add an optional message and then click SEND!

Job done! That track will then appear in your friends inbox!

Finding friends to follow

This is also amazingly easy! Find friends at the bottom of the Friend Feed on the right-hand side. To do so, click FIND FRIENDS, then find your Facebook-connected friends:

Or you can find them directly by typing their name into the main Spotify search box and their profile will be offered as a search suggestion under the heading PROFILES:

Once you get to your friend’s profile, it is just a matter of clicking the FOLLOW button and then his or her activity will show up in your Friend Feed (on the right of the client).

You or your friend is not connected to Facebook, or you are not Facebook friends.

If this is the case, you need to find and follow your friend before you can share tracks to his or her inbox which can be one of the most tricky parts of the Spotify social system. However, don't worry once you get it set up you are sorted!

Very useful tip: Your Spotify username is shown on your online account. Spotify usernames are different from Facebook usernames! You also can't search using email addresses (due to privacy!)

Method 1 - Works best if your friend has a dedicated Spotify username

If your friend has a dedicated Spotify username, then finding them is relatively straightforward in the desktop client! You need to carry out a Spotify URI search with the username, put simply you need to type:

spotify:user:USERNAME

into the main Spotify search box, with USERNAME replaced with your friends username and hit enter! That will load your friend’s Spotify profile in the client, from which you need to press the FOLLOW button:

Once you are following your friend, you can share tracks with them exactly the same way as above in the Facebook friend section. If your friends account is connected to Facebook and yours isn't you should still be able to use their real name in the sharing dialogue!

This method works no matter what way a Spotify account was created. If your friend created their account using Facebook, they will have a username (shown on their online account) which is a number, if you put that number in place of USERNAME it will still work.

Method 2 - Works best if you have a Spotify username

If you have a Spotify username, then get your friend to find you using the steps in Method 1, and ask them to send you a playlist or a track. From your inbox, you can then locate and follow their Spotify profile. Just click on their name in your inbox!

Method 3 - Finding friends without Spotify searching

The final method involves another communication channel outside of Spotify. If username searching is a little to much hassle, just get your friend to send you a link to one of their playlists outside of Spotify, via email or Facebook chat (or whatever!). Getting a link to a playlist is simple, just right click on the name of the playlist, and select either "Copy Playlist Link" or "Copy Spotify URI" (both point to the same thing!):

Community-Desktop Share 6.jpg

Note: It has to be a link to one of their own playlists (one they have created themselves!), not one that they follow!

Once you get the playlist, open the link, it should open the playlist in Spotify. Once that is done, all you need to do is click on your friends name at the top of the playlist (since they are the author) and it will load their profile and from there you can follow them!

Once you are following them, you can share using the same method as in the Facebook friends section above!

"With the Spotify social system, it is amazingly easy to share content with your friends". That's a quote from the top of this page. Come on, we all know this isn't even close to true! Look across the web for countless frustrated users. For a major app in 2016, it's really sad the current state sharing is within Spotify. I mean, I can't find a non-Facebook friend despite the fact that I have their username, email address, phone number, first name, last name, etc. How is this possible? Please, please, please consider fixing the gaping holes in your social logic so people like me can easily find my friends -- yes, even if we're not connected via Facebook. Thanks.

A friend of mine has a webpage intitled Mundo Delash and has the spotify user mundodelash but by any means of search, except locating a playlist and from there adding the user it cam be found. When I search for mundodelash through the search engine it doesn't show. How can she get visibility and be found as a user on spotify?

Liar, liar, pants on fire! This SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK. I have the Windows PC application, with 3 friends who I am "Following" (aparently "Friend" == "Following" for users). Anyway, whenever I try to share a playlist using the instructions above, it NEVER EVER recognizes any name I type into the "Enter a firend's name" dialog box. The "Friends" I am referring to are clearly listed in the rightmost column of my user interface. Whenever I click on oneo f those names, it takes me to their page where it shows I am following them, but sharing in the way described above SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK. It never recognizes a single name I try to type into the sharing window.

Honestly, the best and most consistent way to share a playlist is to get the url and send it to a friend via text or email. Pretty sad for such a wonderful service like Spotify, but the reality of the situation is that their entire social system needs a massive upgrade. Even the collaboration system is weird...not inviting people but rather marking a playlist as collaborative. Not a modern approach at all, and perhaps related to their poorly architected social system.

Ok so I tried to connect with my fb friends and it doesnt work.  When I click ''find my friends'' on the next screen there is no one suggested. 0 person.  Even though I know some of my friends are on Spotify and one of them I follow (used his username to find him).  Why doesnt it work?! So fed up with this...

also finding it impossible to share lists with people. Facebook friends or not. Very disappointing and very frustrating.

I have been researching ways to share content with other users all day.

Obviously paying customers are complaining of how horrible this experience is, and I am one of them.

This little code nonsense does even work “spotify:user:USERNAME".

Just make it easy to share playlists with friends.  It shouldn't be that difficult.  10$ bucks a month for content we don't even own should get us this feature.  Otherwise I will go back to spending my money on an actual album in a real record store.

I would like to follow my Facebook friends on Spotify, and see what they are listening to. I realize there's an opportunity for this in clicking "Find friends" which I see under "Friend activity" in the field to the right, and then "Follow". When I try to find friends that way, it says "None of your Facebook friends are on Spotify". I know that's not true, so I wonder why Spotify can't see my Facebook friends.

I remember when I first edited the settings for connecting my Spotify account with my Facebook account, there was an option that was something like "Give Spotify access to my Facebook account/Facebook friends". I chose "No" just to try if it worked without that permission, and of course it didn't, so I tried to change that setting, but I can't find it since then. I suspect that this is the reason why Spotify can't find my Facebook friends. Or what do you say? What can I do to be able to follow my Facebook friends on Spotify?

Thanks for your help!

Amelie

How do I find my own username on iPhone?  Can't seem to find an answer anywhere on Spotify.  It should be easier to connect with personal friends (other than by FB).  It also should be easier to find support answers to simple questions like this.

We're 08/2017 and this method still doesn't work ! :-( Still any functionality in menu, nor by using the search field.  How stupid can this be ??? Such an obvious functionality ?!!!!  Always that stupid facebook !!! Spotify wake up !!!! More and more people want to get rid of facebook.  Why force people to use facebook ??? :-(  The spotify:user:<profilename> just doesn't work at all !!! I can't even add the contacts of my own family account ?

How about this, find friends not working on my account. It's connected to facebook but it keeps loading and loading without an error. When I try to disconnect from facebook it's greyish and doesn't allow me to disconnect. However I created another account and on this account I connected my facebook and find friends worked fine. Even in different computers find friends is not working for me.

Hello! I'm a newbie, connected through Facebook, and on my mobile iOS app there isn't any button to follow friends. How come there isn't this option? I've tried in the web player also, and I cannot find anything relating to finding friends. I don't want to bother them with questions (I have hundreds of friends) about usernames. How can I see the finding friends tab/button?

I can't be the only one that sees the flaw in this form of searching...

I'm not going to use Facebook because I signed up for Spotify. I didn't sign up for iTunes expecting to sign in with Twitter. I hope that's understandable.

I'm not going to search for usernames since every new account is designated a stream of letters and numbers that make it impossible to search for.

So, the ONLY way to find their account is for them to share a playlist link that THEY had to have created themselves. Then I have to swipe over, click their name, and then tap follow.

Spotify, please tell me you understand how non-userfriendly this is.

My solution? Give us back the option of creating our own usernames again OR allow us to search the names on the account.
