not my music type and its everywhere even in new releases how to stop this

Im from South Africa and every time i look for new music or music mixes i have to go threw tons of local music in Zulu and all other languages except the things i like but the point is i dont understand that kind of music its not my language and i cant take it anymore its making me like this app less and less because i cant find the music i want in new releases, how do i get all that kind of music off my taste list? with that im not going to each artist to say remove from taste list ill sit for a year going threw all the artists and blocking them it even plays this music on the Spotify DJ, i would add a image to show you what i mean but i cant on your community site after struggling.

Hey @Smash_Jax5,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community.

Even when song recommendations are mainly based on your listening history and taste profile, it could also include top songs in your region. So in this case, we'd recommend listening to more music you like from different genres to point recommendations into the right direction.

Also, make sure you don't follow those artists to avoid filling your recommendation with artists or genres you don't like.

Also, if you want to discover new music, you can use the "What's new" section since it has only followed artists or your Release radar that has music you might like from different genres and artists.

Hope this helps. If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.

What is going on with the New Releases For You section? I am a metal fan. I only listen to metal. A lot of it. This section is supposed to be personalised but it's suddenly filled with hip hop and Ed Sheeran. I literally find the presence of Ed Sheeran in what is supposed to be a personalised suggestion section offensive. I have never listened to these artists on Spotify. Why on earth am I having them pushed right to the top of my Spotify app home page? So many terrible problems with the algorithm, with app bugs that have been reported for months but no progress (e.g. repeat and smart shuffle automatically switching themselves on all the time), and AI rubbish everywhere. I pay the top tier for a family account. I will have to leave for Amazon if the core product - curated discovery - does not get fixed.

Spotify Premium, Google Pixel 9, Android.

@stuartmlambert I completely agree that it feels offensive to see mainstream/popular artists’ music in “New releases for you,” when I never listen to or follow these artists.

This behavior makes it seem as if Spotify wants everyone to listen to popular artists, even if they don’t even play the genres of music that we personally enjoy.

Also, I don’t think that “listening to more music you like from different genres to point recommendations into the right direction” is going to prevent “New releases for you” from including mainstream pop/rap or whatever else is popular in our region.

@OscarDC

I don't follow Ed Sheeran or any hip hop or pop artist. Because I don't listen to them. Ever. So what possible reason is there for pushing them into my feed? That turns it from a personalised space to a generic shop front. Which is not what I pay for. I also find being told to "listen to more music I like to point reccos in the right direction" to be completely unhelpful - I already listen to my artists and genre of music every single day, for hours at a time. I have a pool of about 10 artists that I listen to almost exclusively at any given time. I couldn't possibly be pointing the algorithm in a more focused direction. The algorithm simply isn't programmed to actually work. It's clearly pushing artists that Spotify wants to push, not artists that paying listeners want to hear. It is essentially a form of advertising things I don't want at me, even though I am paying for an ad-free experience. The fact that I will never 'buy' Ed Sheeran is something Spotify doesn't care about, it just wants to shove it down my throat. The net result is I have to completely ignore the home page of the app. This is not a good business strategy. It is pushing me away from Spotify bit by bit until I just leave. Which will happen and it won't just be me. It's painful starting anew but I did it when I left Deezer for Rdio and then Rdio for Spotify. This can easily be fixed: just turn off the algorithm that's pushing artists Spotify wants to advertise at people who don't listen and have never listened to those artists or genres. Spotify has the data. Act on it. It's supposed to be a data company.

100% - Well said.  The exact same thing is happening to me.  I listen to nothing but metal - Bands like Megadeth, Devin Townsend, Allegaeon, Rivers of Nihil, Sylosis, Beyond Creation, Iotunn.. are any of these even remotely popular that an algorithm would be like OHHH - Well you need to listen to Morgan Wallen, Rhianna, Noah Cyrus.... NO.

This is absolutely true. The original post and the others. It's just so weird.

I feel like Spotify is trying to be just like any other social network or something, creating "musical echo chambers" in which I can only listen to what I already liked or what's mainstream, but not discover new exciting stuff (I have a very varied music taste, I listen to a lot of different genres, and loved to be able to explore new releases and find new artists I liked. But they seem to have removed that feature (I can only find a couple of "personalised" lists but now way to just see all the new stuff), so I am just "kind of stuck" with what I listen to the most.

But at the same time, in the New Releases section, Spotify keeps recommending me "carefully selected new albums", that do NOT match with my taste, which made me hope for something different... but they are just from almost the only one or two genres that I almost never listen to because I strongly dislike most of them, but are reaaaally popular (at least in my country): mainly boring reggaeton and trap stuff.

I took the time to go through a lot the albums recommended in this "new releases curated" section and there were between 90 an 95% artists from this musical genres. And I only kind of liked a couple of them.

Of course, there are the ones I would listen to in the FM radio, because they are popular... But that is precisely the reason why I pay for Spotify! To "get out of the cage" of mainstream music!

Plus, the new releases weren't even new. Some of them I had listen to years ago an some even were from 2019!!! And I am writing this on 2025!! (for example Nibiru, by Ozuna, which I don't like at all).

I don't know, it is very, very sad and disappointing. Spotify used to be the best, with really good recommendations and lists to choose from... I really hope they can fix this, because I am seriously starting to think about changing to other music stream platforms like Tidal, Amazon, etc.

Agree with complaints written above.

I also noticed that starting this year (2025) I got suggestion of music which I do not listen (even try to listen) in the New release from section. I still get music which I usually listen in the daylist and all personalized lists (genre mixes, artists mixes or niché mixes). As paying customer I would simply do not expect this behavior in the slightest but detest .
