In June 2015 we released version 1.x of the client for Linux in the testing repository.
https://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotify-Community-Blog/Spotify-Client-1-x-beta-for-Linux-has-been-r...
The intention was to fix a few of the bigger issues and then quickly move this to stable. That never happened, since after September, we have had no developers working on the linux client. There are still lots of problem with this version of the client for linux, but we are now seeing much more problems with the old client.
Known linux specific issues in 1.0.23
Most of these we want to fix, but others (like missing tray icon) we probably won't. Link to threads with more issues you have and I will try to add them here. If you can't find your issue already reported, create a new thread and follow this troubleshooting guide for linux.
From now on, the idea is to first release a client to the testing repository as soon as possible, when it is ready internally, then after a week or so if we haven't discovered any serious new crash bug that affects lots of users, it will move to stable. Most of the time, a new linux release will have no linux specific changes, only the changes it shares with the mac and win clients.
Stable repository
To install a client from the stable repository follow the instructions on https://www.spotify.com/download/linux/
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886 echo deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install spotify-client
Testing repository
To install a client from the testing repository, follow the same instructions, but replace the word stable with testing.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886 echo deb http://repository.spotify.com testing non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install spotify-client
Solved! Go to Solution.
Thx a lot I will try
It works fine for 0.9.17 ! Thx
Here for install : https://www.spotify.com/fr/download/
Just change the last sentence
# 1. Add the Spotify repository signing key to be able to verify downloaded packages sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886 # 2. Add the Spotify repository echo deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list # 3. Update list of available packages sudo apt-get update # 4. Install Spotify
sudo apt-get install spotify-client-0.9.17
This is the full answer to revert at 0.9.17 version
Today Debian unstable and Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) dropped support for SHA-1 checksums, leading to the following error message below. Spotify is not alone here as you can see (Google repos also affected) but you probably would like to add the SHA-2 checksum some time soon.

Ya, for me, having spotify running in the background and having a tray Icon with all commands is mandatory.
I don't stay all the day looking in front of the adds
Fix for absent of a tray icon:
1. GNOME/Unity/Cinnamon/KDE/Mate -> alltray app.
2. KDE -> KDocker
Fix for lack of playback control:
1. Unity/GNOME -> http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/03/control-spotify-linux-unity-quicklist
2. KDE -> Install Plasma 5.6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0TzoXhAbxg
Peace
These can be solutions with some version of linux but not all
I'm with Linux Mint 17 stable version
Kde if not used and Unity also not
Thx anyway for these proposal
i don't really get this. i mean that's a pretty bad thinking. for example why osx mean much potential? they have itunes which is very popular and well integrated. why should osx users switch to spotify if they have their own well working solution?
i'm not a premium member yet. but i'm an active Linux user. in my explanation active user means that i'm interested in Linux and technology changes and everything what is related with the platform. interested about my devices and the opportunities. i want to do the same thing like other platform users. of course not everything and not in the same way but something similar. learn, play, have fun. and of course the geeky stuff like reporting Spotify's bugs and etc. i like Spotify too and i guess i'm not alone. and every fine closed source apps are welcome by the community. there's a bunch of alternatives on Linux but some of the cool apps are not available. i'm a longtime Linux user and i'm using the platform as my main platform since 2010. the main reason is that i can do anything nowadays. since Steam available on Linux i have no reason to use Windows. tons of games has been released on Linux in the last few years and that's another good reason to stay on Linux. i bought a lot games CAUSE LINUX. if something works and worth the cost i buy it. and i think most of the Linux users thinking in the same way. if we find something usefull we also pay for it. Spotify Linux release is an opportunity for us, but need to catch up to get more users interests and it will be another good reason to choose or stay on Linux. of course it's depends your developers and your plans, but think it again.
@Corsseir,
I have updated my KDE distribution with the latest version (5.6), and the media player is still not working. Furthermore, I do not see why this version should make it works while the bug comes from Spotify and its implementation of MPRIS.
The lack of a good linux client wouldn't be as noticable if the web player didn't require flash to play thus making it only usable in chromium which ships with its own flash package (for now).
For me, the 1:1.0.24.104.g92a22684-29 version crashes when it comes to a song with a title containing an exclamation mark.
(To be specific and help testing: Shpongle - New Way To Say Hooray!)
It may be caused by the fact that it's a beta OS:
Ubuntu 16.04 Beta - With Kernel 4.4.0
Crash mentions error with strchr().
Yep really missing the menu bar, not having offline mode is a real PITA. Tried blocking every port I found spotify using but didn't manage to get that to help.

Can you try if the following works as a workaround until there is a proper way in the client to toggle offline mode? Start the client with the ap flag pointing to a server that is not a spotify accesspoint.
spotify --ap=127.0.0.1
This is really a great news. Thank you 0815name. 🙂
Running as
spotify --ap=127.0.0.1
gets me into offline-mode fine. I was looking if there was a command line switch that would help but couldn't find anything in the documentation.
