Solved!

Spotify keeps playing after closing - no tray icon

When I close spotify, it continues running in the background. With no systray icon available, I am not able to stop spotify (except using a killall command). I cleared my ~/.cache/spotify and ~/.config/spotify but this did not help.

Specs:

Arch Linux

spotify 1.0.53.758

i3 window manager (so I am using the window manager to close spotify, rather than the X button in the corner which I don't have).

No X button? Interesting...

Maybe reinstalling Spotify helps? I would try deleting Spotify folders before reinstalling the program back, just to be cleaner....

It is a known problem, but I don't know what causes it.

I can reproduce it and I see it more with newer version than I did with earlier versions, but maybe it is related to server response times that is different now. It is a bug that is tracked internally, but no estimation of when can be fixed. This is actually what is stopping me from promoting the later versions to stable.
