[Android][Other] Integration of Spotify and BMW Connected Drive - Android

So this idea has been implemented for iOS, can we see some Android love please???

The Connected Drive app is available on the Google Pllay store but it's only showing integration with Twitter and some other parts of the phone, would love to see Spotify added to this!

Updated: 2015-10-06

Hey everyone, the new 2016 BMW 7 Series is here – with Spotify built in. Pair your Android (with the Spotify app 3.8.0 update or above) to control music straight from the dashboard.

Due to Android OS phone manufacturer compatibility issues, the Spotify integration currently only works with the new 2016 BMW 7 Series. We are working hard to enable Spotify for all compatible BMW Connected Drive and Mini Connected vehicles.

Spotify you are a mess, brand new BMW i3 works perfectly on iOS but zero on android. I can't believe BMW didn't do android auto and carplay but I'll complain to then, until then Spotify integration still missing in 2018 for android... How???

So, i don't understand, is there any plan to fix this?

Like many other users, Spotify on ConnectedDrive does not work properly using Android.

Issues are (almost quoted from @Mikecom32):

  • Spotify randomly disconnects and disappears from the list of sources. Bluetooth is still connected and if I switch over to standard bluetooth, it continues playing fine.
  • The progress bar for the currently playing song jumps around like mad
  • Using the steering wheel controls to change songs in the heads up display shows the first song twice and then what is in the rest of the playlist. To play a song in the queue, you need to choose the previous song in the list

BMW 4 series with ConnectedDrive business, Galaxy S8.

@meahtenoha - I'm sorry to ping you, but is there any chance you could get us an update on this? I'd be happy to point all the BMW car communities over to this thread if it would help get some traction with the Product/Development Manager.

@MikeRiga if we don't get a response, I see two options:

  1. Pull together all the Android users with modern BMWs to a single thread to get noticed
  2. Decompile the APK and attempt to fix the problem ourselves. Other apps (Pandora, etc.) don't seem to have this issue so it should just be a matter of correcting the ConnectedDrive implementation. I tried to get my hands on the official SDK from BMW but it requires a significant investment to pay for the standalone BMW infotainment system that ships with it.

The problem with approach two is that it would need to be fixed with every new Spotify release, and would require everyone to load a app from an untrusted source. Not ideal.

Hopefully the community manager responds. If not, it might be worth rallying everyone from the forums, facebook groups, and reddit to weigh in.

Well, @Mikecom32 option 2 is crazy :). Good luck if you want to do it, and please feel free to share the solution.

The way I see it is that this page is misleading consumers and I am pretty sure it is against the law in many countries: https://support.spotify.com/us/listen_everywhere/in_the_car/bmw-integration/

Let's hope someone from Spotify replies, otherwise we need to move this in a place where can generate more traction (ie. Facebook)

I can confirm Spotify is working (except for the "song progress line" which is jumping back and forth, but not affecting the sound) on the following setup:

BMW F31 2018 (03/2018), Navi professional

Google Pixel 2 XL with Android 8.1 latest update with Standard AVRCP (1.4; 1.6 did not work).

How do you know this..? I've tried to get answers myself but have failed.

 @user-removed Does your F31 have a HUD?

The jumping progress bar and HUD problems are the most common. The disconnect issue seems to come and go, but is fairly widespread.

@Mikecom32: I do not have the HUD, I only have the enhanced display in the speedometer surface. And there today I noticed the issues with the song selection via the steering wheel.

Guy the car just yesterday so still trying out...

Do you plan to update the Android Spotify app to make it work with all BMWs? Still not working with my car from 2013 and my mobile phone

Mikecom32

@user-removed Looks like you have the same problems as the rest of us. I'm going to start a new thread and ping everyone who is having issues. I think this is being ignored since it is marked resolved.
