Let users turn off some or all desktop notifications, e.g. "Your friend ______ just joined Spotify."

So according to the @SpotifyCares Twitter account, there's no way at all to turn off desktop notifications. None. Which seems insane to me! Spotify is the only app that sees fit to blow up my OSX dock with notifications multiple times every week, yet there's no functionality to let me control which notifications I see - or even if I see them at all!

So, obviously:I'm proposing that Spotify let users control this! I, like most people, do not have a deep personal relationship with 100% of my Facebook friends, so I don't need to know whenever some random person I went to high school with gets Spotify. I have zero interest in sending them anything or interacting with them on Spotify in any way, so it benefits neither me nor Spotify to pop up that red notification and nag me to view it before it goes away.

Anyways, yeah! This all feels super obvious, but since the @SpotifyCares Twitter account told me to post this here, that's what I'm doing. "New idea:" STOP BUGGING ME WHEN PEOPLE I DON'T CARE ABOUT JOIN SPOTIFY. USE THE OSX DOCK NOTIFICATIONS SYSTEM RESPONSIBLY. Thank you.

Hey everyone. Now you can go to your the Notifications section of your Accounts page via Spotify.com and adjust both your in-app and email notifcations.

darn, guys, it's really not configurable? I hate the numbers on the icon.

I decided to post a link to this thread on every story on Spotify's facebook page.  I suggest everyone do the same.  If enough of us start doing it, it might give this issue enough exposure to cause them to want to actually do something about this.  And at the very least, perhaps they'll get annoyed with the uselss notifications they receive every day.  A taste of their own medicine!! 🙂

"Suddenly, Spotify is no longer my friendly music-providing pal - it's become a nag, endlessly pestering me with details I don't need to know."

I agree - having a small number pop up on the Spotify icon on the Windows Taskbar for a inconsequential update is very annoying.

I am seriously considering stopping my Premium subscription. When it moves from a friend to a nag on a daily basis - it's time to get rid of the nag.

Just sayin'

Well at least it's not an issue for me anymore, moved entirely over to Apple Music, so long Spotify.

FREAKING annoying.  I want to switch to pandora just for this reason.  This abuse of my attention and a terrible UX.

See y'all on Google Play Music. I'm out.

I have found the sollution to this notifications all the time for stuff I don't want to be notified about:

Unsubscribe from all the playlists that notify me. Get rid of all playlists by record labels, artists, and Spotify.

But drag over all songs from playlists you like into your own private version of each of the playlists before removing the pestering lists.

Solved.

But, why can't Spotify simply fix this, 3+ years after they put it on the back burner (see first response on this thread)?

Then, we would not have to do all this work to fix a simple, highy requested UX problem.

Right now, it is countering the purpose for which Spotify thinks it serves. Information overload equals no information conveyed. Giving customization to notification down to the finest amount, including all off, ultimately makes the theory of notifications in Spotify actually functional and more targeted.

The shot gun on all the time method is the worst and engenders distrust and ill feelings by your users. Especially paid users.

This thread is here since 2012 and the notification issue hasn't been solved yet? I've been anoyed because of the notifications for a long while and today I decided to find a solution, I had hopes until I found this thread :'(

Probably most people don't mind having a messy desktop or pop ups coming from all directions; but many people enjoy having a neat screen with only what we need, most of those people never bothered to come here and post and probably never will... But almost 1000 kudos is more than enough representation of how much this featured is required by customers.

"but this is simply because we're prioritizing other features"... other features that we don't want before a 3 year old request? I just lost faith in humanity!

I've been premium user for a while and super happy but this made me start the Apple Music trial...

I'm pretty sure it would take one of Spotify's dev a few hours to solve and yet here we are years later. Glad to see Apple released its own service. Don't now if they will listen more to their users but it can't really be worse!

I'm about to cancel my premium subscription because of this issue.

A playlist update should NOT have the same priority of notification as a new EMAIL.

The fact that there is no option to configure this is completely mind boggling, and only points to the fact that they actively do not want to fix it because it keeps the app top of mind (in the worst way possible).

Dark patterns, anyone?

I'm uninstalling it from my main laptop now (Soundcloud will do). If it keeps going on then I'm unsubscribing out of principle (and annoyance) -- not paying attention to user requests in order to further some silly business goal is just offensive in this day and age.
