[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

This needs to be back. There's music I want to send to some friend particularly and not share with all my followers and I found this feature very useful.

I'm waiting for a new feature where this is possible again.

The Spotify inbox wasn't used much because it wan't very good.I have a friend who's usually eager to use such tools to share music, but he was reluctant because he was regularly frustrated by the tool. No notifications of new messages of course, but also a text field that wouldn't scroll beyond 3 lines when you tried to reply. Following the threads was complicated. Finding the inbox on the iOS app was difficult. Songs that you had listened to wouldn't be marked as such. I shared with al my followers by mistake because of the desig—and then it was impossible to delete. That's just what I can recall, since I can't go back. I was hoping for improvements, not "deprecation".

Very frustraiting that you've removed the inbox feature.  One of the main reasons that I used Spotify.  If you could please bring back the inbox and the notifications asap that would be greatly apprecaited.  Might be time to go give TIDAL a try...

Please bring the inbox back! One of my favorite features of the app. I have SO much music backlogged here between friends. We used it ALL the time to share tracks. Now it's all gone. My engagdement with the app will prob drop around 50% now. Looking around for other apps that allow this feature...

Lookie there, Spotify. 1,720 votes. And this page hasn't even been publicitized much. Doesn't that say something to you? We all miss the Inbox feature. AND you're also removing other features without giving us a heads up. This is enough, Spotify. Bring back our favorite features and live up to your reputation of being a social music app.

Exactly, we need it back and also a heads up when features are being removed. I loved the social aspect of Spotify and that is what kept me away from Tidal and Apple Music. Bring our features back.

Having the notifications/messaging system taken away from Spotify users is a HUGE disadvantage to not only the company but the users. Messaging and notifications were the only way to specifically and privately interact with other users, and to see who is following along with your music. I have been a Spotify premium member for more than two years and am now seriously reconsidering my membership. Without the ability to interact with other Spotify users, Spotify has taken away users ability to share music and grow in their musical communities. Spotify WAS a great place to experience new music and chat with others about their musical interests, but now Spotify is no better than Pandora (no offense Pandora), and actually, Pandora has at least some form of notification center, so they are currently doing better than Spotify. The functions of Spotify have been restricted to an uncomfortable level, and I no longer feel the same way about Spotify as I used to. Without the ability to interact with fellow users directly on the App, I might as well pay for Apple Music. Spotify had a sense of community to it, but that is no longer the case.

SPOTIFY, please reconsider revamping your messaging/notifications system. This has clearly been very upsetting for MANY of your paying/non-paying members. This has been very disheartening. Music is supposed to be interactive, and we no longer have that opportunity. All of us who have posted about this issue care about music and believe in the universality of it. If Spotify cares about it's members and about music, they will renew the messaging/notifications system.

So, nearly two thousand people came here to tell Spotify this was a very desirable feature they discontinued.  Now imagine how many people are frustated by this who aren't aware there is a method for voicing their frustation (hundreds of thousands, I'd think).   I just told my mother to joing Spotify as she wants more music in her life and I want to be able to send suggestions her way.  How am I supposed to do this now, Spotify?  Copy link to clipboard, send to her in an email?  Come on!

(Also it's been almost a month now, is there any response yet?)

PLEASE BRING THIS FEATURE BACK!

Part of the main reasons I use spotify is sharing and sending songs and playlists with my friends.  We discuss them and explore new artists together in an easy way.  Although you can connect to social profiles and send updates that way, not everyone likes to do this! The last thing I want is to connect my social profiles to Spotify and spam everyone with updates.  This was such a great feature and I really hope they bring it back. Seriously bummed about this.

My girlfriend along with some other friends share songs in private all the time. I don't want to use some "other" social network for messaging nor do I want to manage a playlist if it's a song I don't like.  It doesn't have to be elaborate, just ability to share in private.  My user experience went from share and a couple clicks to copy/paste link from one app to another and click here there twice there and hope they receive it.
