Proper Genre recognition; Bhangra / punjabi

I’ve noticed a major gap in how Punjabi and Bhangra music is categorized compared to other global genres.

Punjabi music — including Bhangra and Punjabi Hip-Hop — is one of the fastest-growing streaming genres in the world, with over 2000% growth in recent years. Artists like Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, AP Dhillon, and Sidhu Moose Wala have taken Punjabi music to global stages such as Coachella, mainstream award shows, and international charts.

Despite this, Spotify often classifies these songs only as “International”, instead of recognizing them under more accurate genres like Bhangra, Punjabi, or Punjabi Hip-Hop. Unlike Latin, Reggae, or Dancehall — which are correctly labeled and filterable at the library level — Punjabi music is left invisible within user libraries and liked songs.

As a result, fans cannot filter, sort, or organize their collections by Punjabi/Bhangra, even though Spotify clearly uses these tags internally for curated playlists like Bhangra Bangers and Punjabi 101. This lack of visibility feels like a missed opportunity and, honestly, a bit dismissive of a music culture that is making such a major global impact.

My request is simple:

Please add visible genre tags (Punjabi, Bhangra, Punjabi Hip-Hop) at the track and album level.

Allow users to filter and sort their libraries and liked songs by genre, just as is possible with Latin, Reggae, and Dancehall.

Highlight Punjabi/Bhangra as a recognized global genre, not just under “International.”

Punjabi music has proven itself on the biggest stages in the world, and Spotify has been a key platform in its growth. Proper recognition in the app will not only respect the artists and culture, but also enhance the listening experience for millions of fans worldwide.
