Metal and Storytelling, Why the Connection?

Metal and Storytelling, Why the Connection?

One thing that's always intrigued me is how, compared to other genres, so many metal songs, even albums, have some kind of "story" going on. Now, you could argue that every song ever composed, even instrumental ones, has a story, concept, or message behind it of some kind, but how come this is more explicit with metal and its many subgenres? How come there are so many metal songs (with progressive rock coming in at second place) out there about demons, myths, legends, World War II, science fiction, compared to, say, country, pop, jazz, or R&B? This is not to say all genres are unable to produce works of imaginative and cerebral quality, but I wonder why we tend to see it most in metal. Is there some kind of intrinsic connection at some level? Is it because metal is not as mainstream as other genres and this there is more to experiment with? Coming in as someone who only likes the "metal" that's more or less glorified hard rock, I would love to hear your thoughts.

I think it's because metal musicians as well as those in adjacent genres tend to have niche interests outside of music.

So when they "write about what they know / like" it's songs about D&D or horror movies or historical Egypt.

I love the niche-ness of it.

Folk comes in many forms my good sir.
