My Question or Issue

I recently had the idea to develop a browser-based game that would use the Spotify Web Playback SDK to play music from the user’s own account via OAuth login.
All playback would happen client-side, with no audio or personal data stored on any server, and fully in line with the SDK requirements (no caching, no downloads, no offline use).

While reviewing the documentation, I came across this restriction regarding games and interactive experiences:
https://developer.spotify.com/policy#:~:text=Do%20not%20create%20a%20game%2C%20including%20trivia%20...

Before I invest more development time, I wanted to ask:

  • Why does the policy not permit games, even if they are clearly marked with “Powered by Spotify” and fully comply with branding requirements? I have noticed that there are apps on the market that appear to function as music-based games (for example, Hitster). How do such apps operate in compliance with Spotify’s terms, or do they have special agreements?
Is there a process to request an exception or approval for a game that integrates the Web Playback SDK?
  • If exceptions are possible, what steps should I follow to make such a request

I’d like to ensure everything is compliant before proceeding.

Thanks for your help!
