My Question or Issue

Here are a few questions we’d like to clarify:

  1. Integration via Web Playback SDK:
Is it possible to use the Spotify Web Playback SDK within our system, where an end-user logs into their personal Spotify account and plays a selected playlist through our web-based interface? Our system is built on dedicated hardware (embedded architecture, no full browser), but with a web-based control panel.
  2. Single Login – Multiple Zones:
Our system can handle multiple independent audio channels (zones) simultaneously. If the user logs into Spotify on our device, is it allowed (and technically feasible) to assign different playlists to different zones from a single account, or would separate Spotify accounts be required per zone/channel?
  3. Commercial Usage & Licensing:
How does Spotify approach the use of its services in commercial hardware and spaces (e.g. stores, restaurants)? Are there restrictions on using personal Spotify accounts for playback in public/commercial environments? Is there a specific licensing model or partner program for this type of application?
  4. Intermediate Playback Options:
Is there an officially supported method where a user can simply log in, select a playlist, and allow our player to handle playback and zone management via Spotify APIs — without implementing the full Web SDK on our side?
  5. Communication Methods & Control:
Does Spotify support WebSocket or other API mechanisms to remotely control playback from our system? What are the best practices for integrating third-party audio hardware with Spotify from a developer’s perspective?

Hi @SlaWla88

Thank you for posting in the Spotify Community and Welcome!

I understand you're looking to implement Spotify into commercial hardware. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

Just a quick note:

  • The Spotify Playback SDK cannot be used in commercial projects without prior written approval from Spotify.

  • It also requires an active Spotify Premium subscription (please note that mobile-only plans are not supported).

For commercial use cases, we recommend reviewing the dedicated documentation here: Spotify for Commercial Hardware

This resource outlines the approved pathways for integrating Spotify in commercial environments.
