My Question or Issue

So, kind of a policy/terms question I guess..

I am developing a web application that allows presenters to create interactive presentations for family or small groups. The presentations are supposed to include some songs and corresponding questions along with it.

I saw in the compliance tips that there are some cases that this is not allowed. But I’m wondering if this scenario is ok to proceed with, since the circumstances should be ok.

Basicly this is what happens:

  • Only the presenter plays Spotify audio using the Web Playback SDK or Embed Player.
  • Participants never receive Spotify audio through the application. Their devices only display interaction for answering question.
  • The presenter’s device is often connected to external speakers/projectors, so participants hear the music only in the physical room.
  • The app itself does not resell, redistribute, or compete with Spotify streaming. Any paid subscriptions in the app cover presentation/game features — not access to Spotify content.
  • Playback is always tied to the presenter’s own Spotify Premium account, with proper authentication.

I am aware of the policy that prohibits “trivia/quiz” integrations with Spotify. However, since in my case Spotify audio is never delivered to participants’ devices and is not part of the gameplay logic, I believe this falls outside the restricted use case.

I guess it can be compared to a music competition in a bar where a presenter is showing something on a screen and then manually starting their Spotify app, playing a track sequence and then stop and let the crowd mark the answer on a piece of paper. This would be pretty much the same except the playing of Spotify content would take place from the presenters account integrated with the web app and Web Playback SDK.

What do you think, will this be a valid scenario for use of the API?

Hey, welcome to the community!

According to Spotify's current API and SDK terms of use, playback must always be personal and controlled by the connected Premium account holder. What you describe comes very close to permitted use, as there is no redistribution, resale, or streaming to third parties within the app. The point to note is that the policy actually restricts quiz/game integrations when Spotify audio is part of the core mechanics; in your case, if the music is being used incidentally and limited to the physical room, it's more comparable to someone using their personal account in a bar or classroom. Still, I recommend reviewing the Developer Policy and, if the project is commercially released, contacting Spotify directly to ensure the use case is fully compliant.

Keep me updated.
