spotify throws error when trying to authorise third party app

trying to use a third party app which displays the current song along with pause and other controls etc in the windows taskbar, I've used this app before and it does work, but now i am trying to set it up on a new windows install, so i create a spotify devapp with a client and secret client id and callback url, i enter the client id's into the third party app, which prompts a spotify link to open up which asks for authorisation from the third party app to see my activity, when i press agree it just says there was an error (no code or anything)
