Ever since they implemented Daily Mixes, the algorithm has become an echo chamber.
Song radios are a flat 50 songs now, but if I play an even remotely similar artist, it plays ONLY songs and artists I've heard before.
When I pick a song and just want a new radio, I'm legitimately seeing 30/50 songs I've already saved, and maybe 1 song on the entire radio I haven't heard before.
I can no longer tell the difference between any Song/Artist radio, and my On Repeat/Repeat Rewind generated playlists, they're THAT similar.
I follow over 500 artists to see their weekly releases each week, and my account is 7 years old. It feels like the algorithm has boxed me in and I'm stuck, but it's only been this mundane the last year or so.
I'm lucky if a station or radio recommends me a new artist, and if I start their artist radio... it shills me 40/50 songs I ready know again- often not that related to this new artist.
It feels like the algorithm is actively preventing me from finding new music because it just wamts me to stream what I already like.
Do I need a new account, do they just know me too well??? Does anyone else have this problem? How can I force Spotify to diversify now that infinite stations only exist from playlists? Would love to hear your experiences and tricks for fresh stations.
Hey everyone,
Thanks for sharing your feedback, we appreciate it.
Note that the radio gets compiled based on the genre and artist of a track, your personal music library and that of other users with similar tastes. So if you feel that it's not getting switched up as much as you'd like, we recommend that you expand your library by liking new songs/albums and following artists. That way you'll give the algorithm a boost.
Spotify also offers other great ways to stumble on exciting new tunes. Once you click on Search on mobile devices or Browse in the desktop app you're able to pick from a wide variety of genres and moods. That will lead you to a collection of playlists you can use to expand your music collections.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.
Everyone vote for this suggestion so Spotify will actually do something about this (they say they will once it reaches the necessary amount of votes, it currently only has 4 after I voted and there are way more people who agree with this here on this thread).

I just want to discover new songs from different genres! But EVERY radio (with different songs by different artists and different genres) contains the same songs. It's an echo of my "On Repeat". The new radios just killed my musical taste because I have to skip my favourites in EVERY F* playlist or radio!
I have 1300 songs in my liked saved list that has complied over 7-8 years. It is painful to hear when I start a radio station based on a artist it literally replays the same songs over and over. I start radio to hear new songs, not the ones I have saved. This needs to be fixed. - Long time Spotify customer that is starting to lose faith in their progress to match new music to each user.
100% this. It's frustrating. The thing I got Spotify for is to discover music. There's no point in in even having the ability to make radios from artists or songs when it plays 98% things you've already heard. It needs fixing badly.
This is still not fixed, I'm leaving spotify at my next payment.
Totally agree with everyone here - song/album/artist radio shouldn't be so based on my personal taste profile, since it makes it so much harder to discover new songs!
Agreed we should take to social media to see if we can gain mainstream support. I assume even "important" people are vexed by this. I am gonna make a few posts here and there to try to get attention.
Hey folks,
Thank you for your feedback.
Just a quick reminder that this live idea has gathered the necessary amount of +Votes and is currently being reviewed by the internal teams at Spotify. Be sure to Subscribe to it (if you haven't already) so you're notified when there are any updates on its status.
Cheers!
I would add one more thing: a track's popularity factors too heavily into the likelihood that it lands on my station. The algorithm appears to recognize that people who like artist X tend to also like artist Y, but it always feeds me the single most popular track from artist Y. That tendency is both boring and self-reinforcing.
idk, spotify has been doing this to me too. i will pick a lofi song and click radio, and it'll start playing 21 savage... i'll click on a banger from "So Good - B.o.B." and it'll start playing Ben E. King? what is this? they have nothing to do with each other!
these radios are exactly what the OP described, extremely frustrating. I will be moving to youtube music because premium offers it as a free option and it's cheaper for both.
i miss the old days where you can pick a song and its radio will actually be good new songs you can listen to for hours and enjoy your paid subscription, but spotify just doesn't listen to their feedback. they can say as much as they want "we appreciate your feedback" but when people have actual good ideas in the community, but they don't get traction because people don't know about it, they close the case completely without question, and prioritize popular but useless options.
please make a better program spotify, you guys have the ability to make something amazing but choose not to listen to the little fish in the pond.
You can easily create independent fresh new song radios online on the spotify.com webplayer. Just log out from your one account, search for your song and create songradio. You can add this radio to a playlist or whatever and listen it on your premium account. A little cumbersome, but it works...
Same issue! Out of every song radio only 5/30 songs are new. Sometimes the these radios dont make sense! Eg. I open up a song radio of a Bollywood song and in the radio maximum songs are indie and the ones in my library. For this reason I have started using third party websites to find similar songs and they work much better than Spotify. Also tried YouTube music and its endless songs feature is much better, atleast it helps to set a proper mood. If this radio issue is not fixed I might just switch.
Hey all - I am equally **bleep** about this and it has not changed.
SPOTIFY should have an option to listen to SONGS NEVER HEARD BEFORE (not songs not liked, or songs not in a playlist) based on an artist, playlist, song, genre etc - the radio feature used to do this but it has lost that ability and therefor is worthless.
I've got over 5k liked songs and a million playlists... and I still want the algorithm off. I noticed that if I log out and want to listen to radio for the song Boys Don't Cry, it gives me a better list that I actually want to listen to... but I can't listen without logging in. How do I turn off the algorithm.
It's almost November 2023 and this issue was not yet resolved. I am frustrated and upset. ANY song that I try to put on radio mode is ONLY playing the songs that I saved on my playlists, over and over. The idea is to hear NEW songs when on radio mode, not the ones that I already know, keeping me in a boring loop. SPOTIFY, please change this brutal algorithm so I can again enjoy your service that I pay a monthly fee for!
Bumping this post, now 2024 and STILL experiencing this issue. Radio ideally would be listening to an artist and hearing similar artists. I listen to Taylor Swift one day and now she’s coming up on an entirely different artist/genre’s radio. This is the reason I left pandora many years ago, because Spotify used to be different and was good at introducing new (to me) music, not recycling what I listened to yesterday. Some days are country, some are pop, some are folk, some alternative and I don’t want them to mix when I’m just aiming for a certain one!
