Spotify is extremely slow to sync offline playlists on iOS

Hi,
I'm running the latest Spotify for iOS 5.0.1 version + did a complete restore on 2 iPhones 4S yesterday. I have the same problem on both my iPhones: Spotify is unbearably slow to sync offline playlists.
I have 1200 songs that I want to sync for offline listening. The mobile Spotify app is extremely slow to sync songs and usually stops after 20-25 songs. This has been happening for weeks if not months.
I have a blazing fast cable connection: 100Mb download speed + backup 8Mb download DSL. I've tried on these 2 connections + a 20Mb DSL connection at work and I have the same issue. Wifi signal is 5/5 on both iPhones and bandwidth tests are good.
Friends of mine living where I live (Strasbourg, France) don't seem to have the same problem. I can only think that it might be related to my account.
In addition, I've had to re-download all my playlists something like every 2 weeks for the last 4 or 5 month. I'm only using Spotify for offline listening on 2 devices so it has nothing to do with the 3 device limit.
I usually turn offline mode off every 5 days to make sure my offline playlists will stay on my 2 iPhones but I still have to re-download everything very frequently.
Spotify has become unbearably painful to use because of all this...
Please help!
Thank you,
Fred

Please try to sync the tracks again now, it should've been greatly improved since yesterday evening.

Hope it works better now!

Although syncing playlists to my iPhone is slow, it's bearable.  My large issue is that when manually syncing specific playlists, I'm only to sync 1 playlist at a time.  Furthermore, when trying to scroll down to view all of my playlists, spotify snaps back up to the top of the screen, not allowing me to see playlists further down.

The view of the playlist sync window is also extremely cumbersome, not allowing to change to a detail list view rather than the album cover view.  In addition, the playlists are not in any sort of particular order, so it becomes difficult to find exactly what you're looking for.

Lastly, the playlists viewed includes both my spotify playlists as well as my iTunes playlists, even I've set my preferences NOT to show iTunes music sources.  I can sync my iTunes files from iTunes (quite easily I might add.)

All in all, the system needs a big overhaul.

I had previously experienced slow sync issues but as reported these have improved significantly. I went to see a band called 'Waters' in Lyon tonight and added their album to my playlist from my seat. I got home and 10 songs synced over wifi within 2-3 mins.

@Mrgrimm your problems are predominantly user interface related. This slow syncing problem thread isn't the best place for it to be seen by people who can solve your problem.

Yes. Please do something about the view of the Playlist Sync window. The issue with the playlists snapping back to the top after scrolling is completely maddening. I can't believe this has not been fixed. GIVE US A LIST VIEW PLEASE!

Hi, I'm still having lots of problems syncing playlists offline.  The only way I can get them to sync is to listen to the song in a wifi area.  What's up?

I'm having the same issue as well. I'm connected via wifi and it has taken 30 minutes to sync 5 songs. I have an iPhone 4 and just updated to the newest OS today which I think is 5.1. Its like brutal slow. I had to resync everything after the log in issues we had recently.

updated it last night still the same issues. i let it run overnight after the update and restart. turned off lock screen and staed playing a song with spotify app open. 200 songs synced in 7 hours? Extreme quality. That's not very good. Again its not my network as my android tablet an sync the entire list in half that time.

Hello community,

I just started using the Spotify premium service. I was pretty happy and overwhelmed about the features.

Firstly I only used it on my windows desktop and my macbook. Everythings works perfectly there.

What I did

A while after I found out that there is an iPhone app. I installed it, synced my songs for offline use. Worked!

Than again after a while I found out that there is an iPad app. Also synced for offline use. Worked!

Problem

And again I discovered a new feature. "Sync in extrem quality". I changed the settings from high to extrem on both my iPad and iPhone.

Spotify resynced (form high to extrem) all the songs on my iPad within a few minutes. But it takes hours (still syncing) on my iPhone. I tried to reinstall Spotify on my iPhone and restarted it. Didn't help. I can't get Spotify to sync the songs for offline use on my iPhone. Even if I set quality to normal. The problem just appeared out of nowhere.

Please help.

EDIT

Long story shot: Offline syncing is slow on iPhone but fast on iPad and Mac. iOS5.1.1. Same WiFi. Worked before, problem just occured.

EDIT2

Seems that many others have the same problem with sync beeing slow on the iPhone. This user also reports that his iPhone is slow but iPad fast.

Please reply and show that you are interessted in fixing the problem or me and I'm sure many others might cancle their subscription which would be a shame. Cause the service you offer is realy great.

I just read through this thread and I'm surprised at how poorly Spotify communicates with its paying customers. I mean, this is obviously a problem for so many people, so how come the people at Spotify aren't more vocal on this thread? This is BS.

I'll be quiting this service if it doesn't improve soon. Its been one year since I joined and the same problem with slow syncing exists today. There has been no improvement. I'll give it one more month and then I'm out.

This problem has been bugging premium users for the better part of a year, and Spotify support STILL can't give us a fix to this wildly prevalent issue? Even better, why not just let us sync via USB? The iPod Touch does this jsut fine.

We know that us paying subscribers are the only customers keeping Spotify afloat (even though it looks like the company's earnings are in a ditch currently).

I don't know if this incompetence is on the part of the staff being lazy or on the part of management not hiring enough staff.

I'm switching to another paid service in a month if Spotify doesn't fix this for all iPhone users, 4, 5 and 3GS.

I don't see a whole lot of participation/acknowledgement from the Spoitfy staff on this forum string.  I don't often post on forums, but I though this might be worth it:

Dear Spotify staff:

I am going to cancel my Premium subscription.  Until you can get the iPhone 5 to sync at a someone reasonable rate, the Premium subscrition has no value to me.  I look forward to any forthcoming improvement, but until then, I am very disappointed.

Thank you.

I just started using Spotify on my iPhone 5 and I'm loving it so far but I'm seeing this issue already. Over wifi syncing is extremely slow. I'm also seeing rapid battery drain while listening to synced music (not to bad while streaming). Strange things are a foot with this IOS app. I have some time left on my free trial so lets hope this gets sorted out soon.

10 months later still the same issue.

Spotify, I'm speechless; I don't know what to say (I'm being polite)! If this is what you call "Premium" service I don't even want to think about your normal service!

I am trialing MOG to see how it works.

this is driving me crazy...after reading through this thread I'm still not clear on whether this is a Spotify App issue or an iOS6 issue or a freekin' wifi issue...Pretty sure it's not wifi though because I'm having the issue on different networks.

So I have somewhat good news.  The good news is my sync is working again - the bad news is be long, destructive process it took to get there.

I decided to go ahead and upgrade to iOS 6 yesterday for other reasons besides my spotify issues.  Unfortunately the inital upgrade did not go well and I ended up having to do a complete restore - which also caused me to have to do a  new install of everything (fun times - not!).

After the iOS restore and new install I can now sync on WiFi again.  Needless to say I would not recommend this action to others especially if you have a lot of applications or other data on your device (other than music I really have nothing downloaded to my ipad - really).  But if you are really desperate you might try the complete removal and re-install if you are on iOS6. (or upgrade to iOS 6 and then reinstall).

hoping Spotify has an answer that solves everyone's problem soon!

Do you mean restore from itunes and remove all settings, apps, media and set up as new iphone? Or is restoring your iCloud or Itunes Backup OK?

Because the former would be a pain in the a.

Nope. I'm with Optus in Australia. Our iPhones are the same as the EU and Asia iPhone 5s.

Clearly if there's a bug I think your fine using WPA but please don't put your router down to a settings such as b that cuts down your transmit rate by more than 80%

russtm

I will admit to having wifi issues before. But Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings seemed to fix them and leaves everything intact just requires re entering wifi passwords.

I have had major issues with battery life, general wonkyness on my iPhone 4S even after doing a complete restore. My issue was that even though I didn't restore from iTunes I restored from iCloud it still had issues. I still backup to iCloud incase of the inevitable but don't plan to ever use it to restore my iphone after a reset or transfer to a new device.

russtm

Trust me there's no value in lowering you wifi down to b. if there was people would be doing it in droves. Spotify doesn't handle the sending of information on wifi that is done on the Operating system and hardware level and your just limiting the capability of your hardware.

"Spotify doesn't handle the sending of information on wifi that is done on the Operating system"

You're right in theory, but the evidence in this instance is mounting that IOS applications on IOS6 play a bigger role (possibly one in priortisation)

I also suspect the problem relates to one of the following IOS6 issues.

802.11b < 802.11g < 802.11n

WPA < WPA2

You just crippled your router. I suggest you update your firmware on your router and set it to WPA2-AES and set it to allow only wireless n if you have issue with any devices then allow wireless n and g.

Wireless b goes to 11mbps, g to 54mbps, and n to 130mbps. Wireless b is from the early 2000. And TKIP is discouraged by most router manufacturers now days they recommend you only use WPA2-AES.

I think we understand that, but when The difference is syncing and not syncing at all I'll put up with a few days of slower wifi to get the songs on then change it back to n WPA2 AES.

I've used spotify premium on my iPhone 4 for about 2 years and this is the first time I'm experiensing issues with syncing my playlists to offline mode. When a track is ready the grey arrow-symbol i supposed to turn green but instead I get a red circle with i white questionmark in and the syncing stops. Could somebody please tell me what this means and give me some intel on how to proceed? Thanks!

I don't see why it should be any slower than downloading a song off iTunes. Other than DRM, the bits are all the same.

Did a direct comparison between the iphone 4 and 5.

Creat random playlists and sync to each device.

Both running IOS 6.0.1 and Spotify 0.5.9.1

The iphone 4 syncs files approx 4 - 5 x faster than the iphone 5.

I also tested 0.5.8 on the iphone 4 prior to the 0.5.9.1 upgrade, and there is a noticable slow down with 0.5.9 on the iphone 4 (didn't measure the difference)

The iphone 5 is taking 5 or more minutes per track, the iphone 4 takes 1 min or less per track syncing a random playlist under identical conditions.

This is still a major issue. I'm trying to sync a large volume of songs for my AUS flight tomorrow. It's been downloading all night but only synced ~30 songs with ~600 to go.

When will Spotify fix this?

I'm syncing all my starred songs to my iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0.1 and Spotify 0.5.9. It's still taking forever.
