I'm in South America, my account is registered in Australia. I've been over here for 2 months and haven't had an issue using spotify until today. I open the app on my iPhone 4S and it emedietly closes. After repeated attempts I briefly saw a message saying 'error 408' I understand that this has something to do with using spotify overseas? How do I resolve the issue and continue using spotify over here in South America?

Does your account overview show an active premium subscription?

No, apparently even though I thought I had a premium account, it seems to have switched back to a free user account... Which means I must have reached the end of the 14 day travel allowance. I should still be able to use offline mode though, correct? It won't stay open though

So should I be able to listen to music in offline mode? Or do I need a premium account to do that overseas?

You need a Premium account after 14 days, online or offline. If Spotify is available in the country you are in, you can switch to it in your account profile.

When did you last get billed for your premium account?
