If I want to sign up for the free premium trial can why can't I use a gift card instead of putting in a credit card?

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂 

The 30 day free trial is the first month of a rolling monthly subscription (charged at £0.00 so it is free), hence why you are required to enter your card details to redeem the trial. Since it is not possible to set up a rolling subscription using gift cards, as they are a one off payment, they are not eligable for the free trial. 

You can however if you have a credit card subscribe, get the free trial and then immediately cancel, your account will remain on premium for the free 30 days and then revert to Spotify free instead of charging your card.
