Student Discount? Already Have Account

I have been using Spotify for over 2 years and I was wondering if I had to start a new account in order to get the discount or if there was a way to link it to my university email account so that way I can keep all of my playlists together.

It doesn't really matter if you use a university email address or not. All you need to do is go to https://spotify.com/student and verify yourself. After successfully signing up for the student discount, the discounted rate will kick in on your next monthly payment date.
