Is it possible to get the current deal of 3 months for $0.99 through a gift card (for my friend), or is it only available to download through spotify.com?

That's a good question.

Unfortunately gift cards are ineligibe for discounts. Gift cards are only worth one month of premium per $10.

You can only get the discount through the actual discount page. ^^
