http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/15/3649068/spotify-browser-player-web-app
I just read this article on The Verge saying that a browser based Spotify player is being rolled-out today. I really hope this is true! If this is the case how do we sign up for it? I've been dying to use Spotify on my uni's computer clusters!
Solved! Go to Solution.
Aha Cheers, i came into the thread on the second page from a search aha 😄
not to worry
Awesome!
For a Beta it's indeed awesome already!
I like a lot of things about this web app:
- Intuitive and well designed: Those overlapping screens at the middle are great
- 10 Top Tracks instead of 5 yay!
- Pretty fast already (besides playlists may load a bit longer if you got a lot of tracks)
- [Time] - Track - Artists is shown in the tab of your browser.
Now you always know what you're listening to without opening client!
Like hpguru pointed out, firefox uses quite a lot memory running it. Just got playlists up to 30 titles so for me it went to 350 MB max. If you got hundreds of songs in it, I can imagine you reaching the 500 MB. I got 8 GB Ram, so not that much of an issue for me. Firefox still was smooth, also with a lot of tabs opened.
But for older pcs/laptops it might ruin the experience.
All in all, great app already. Now we know what you were working on all that time! ;D
I have 3-Core AMD Phenom processor and 6GB RAM.
@hpguru Firefox is so dead, why haven't all learnt that Firefox is nothing else than a huge crap! It's NOT Spotify fault that the Spotify Web client does hog up Firefox, only opening the local newspaper (they have a simple web site) just make the computer run like hell, sounds the fan begin to saw the the computer in parts (Laugh, but this is REAL, very real!).
krikelin, there is no problems when I use Deezer or Rdio web player. 😉
Interesting, that this problem is still in this **bleep**ty Firefox... At least Deezer and Rdio have good web app without any glitches.
The problem is that Spotify app does JavaScript operations that requires lot of memory, such parsing strings and moving elements, and Firefox is a big memory leaker as the gecko engine does free memory in a badly way, that hogs up the current thread.
Deezer and Spotify app does invoke very much changes to the DOM-tree, so that is fuzzy, but it seems like Chrome is behaving in another way, since Chrome relys on a copy of the DOM tree in the memory (binary), and updates the DOM tree in a second thread, which making the element rendering more smooth, and I believe firefox Gecko is doing very much string operations on the fly. This is my suggestion about the problem.
Hey guys 🙂
You can also use Chrome to make the Spotify web client a desktop application (in behaviour).
After you set it up, navigate to play.spotify.com in chrome and then go to Menu > Tools > Create Application Shortcuts which will allow you to use the Web Player in its own dedicated window, with taskbar entry, start menu entry and desktop icon if you like.
Working like a charm for me! The Spotify icon just doesn't scale well, but you can change it manually 😉

Thanks for the tip Peter, works and looking good!
But if I do it like that way, my chrome behaves really weird in task manager. Showing me 5-6 chrome.exe in processes.
Maybe my laptop went crazy for a bit... but could you check if it's the same for you when running it that way?
I would suggest you have a read at this page.
Basically chrome uses multiple processes as it runs each tab, plugin and extension in its own process. Its part of the security and stability nature that google have implemented.

Ah okay thx, didn't know since I normally use Firefox. ;D
Chrome went pretty smoothly but for people with low RAM it might be still too much (5-7 chrome.exe - each 65 MB for me).
EDIT:
Just tried it with Firefox again: after 2 hours of listening I had 750 MB (!) Ram usage of Firefox, which lead of course to freezes.
Restarting the browser and back to "only" 350 MB RAM.
MAJOR FLAW: No scrobbling support!
But since it's still on beta I hope this will be implemented soon! Should not be too hard to implement this at all.
Loving the UI similar to the iPad app, rocks on the uni library 🙂
One thing I noticed is that it is not possible to change the quality of the streaming. As I am using pretty good in ear headphones this is really disappointing. So I still have to use my iPhone at work (as I am not allowed to install anything on my office notebook).
Maybe this will change in the future!?
This is what I have been eagerly waiting for since hearing utters of it in September... My Samsung Chromebox and Chromebook finally have a voice!
Thank you Spotify.
For the record, I run the dev channel builds and am seeing the Spotify tab consume only 1-3% of the CPU during play. This is less than most standard websites being open. between 80 and 95MB of memory is used depedning on the song position for obvious reasons, etc.
Great job on the optimizations! This is powerful!
I will surly continue using this beta alongside the Android releases for my other devices!
I found a bug:
You can't login, if you have special characters (like &) in your password.
Agree with @Wall_E. Scrobbling support is absolutely needed!
This is really fast and has a nice UI. I'm sure the rest of the features like scrobbling and such will be there in the final version - this is just a beta. I have to say for a beta though it is quite stable at the core functionality.
Hi! Thanks for this one - we're aware of it and a fix is in the works.
Thanks a lot Stupify! I've been excited about using spotify online for a very long time. I messed around with it a little today and it's awesome. So awesome that after some updates I would consider using it instead of the mac app entirely. Definitely made my day being able to use this. Thanks again buddy!
-------
Not really sure if you can consider this a bug, but in the online Beta, playlist folders no longer exist in the playlist menu. This is a small issue but being able to organize playlists goes a long way for people that have a lot of them *Myself included!

Lastly, I'd like to say farewell to Pandora. You had a good run guys... spotify just did a hell of a lot better. Nice knowin' ya!
