My Question or Issue
When Bluetooth headphones are connected, pressing the play/pause button will automatically launch and play Spotify even when it's not already open. This is particularly annoying as sometimes when using another app one press will pause that app but a second press will open Spotify instead of playing the app I was previously listening to. How on earth do I disable this?
Hi @chrisos86,
Thank you for posting on this thread!
After running some tests from our side using different phones, devices and OS we can conclude that the way the app behaves when connected to Bluetooth devices, including car stereo systems, varies based on the device involved. These actions are a result of how the specific Bluetooth device is designed to interact with the Spotify API. However, we’re constantly optimizing our app, so this behavior might change in future updates.
We understand where you're coming from, so in this case we can suggest you submit a new Idea to implement an option to manually enable/disable automatic Bluetooth playback from the app, as it might help with this issue. In this article you can find the steps to submit it.

Every time my headphones are connected to my mobile (several mobiles tried), if I press a button on the headphones, this starts spotify playing something. And this is depite spotify not being a currently open or recently used app.
It is so annoying that I will be removing spotify.
Also it is stopping me signing up for premium.
I press a particular button on my headhones because it gives a certain tone that notifies me that my phone is connected to my mobile. I do this right before a call. I do not do this because I want some random audio playing.
It has been reported before, but Spotify don't seem to care to solve the issue.
Download the Sound Assistant app from the Samsung App Center. It's free and it's Samsung. Once opened, change 'Favorite Media App' to something that is not music or sound related (I changed mine to a messaging app). This fixed it! I can still control Spotify with touch controls when it's open, but I have to open it manually, which is what I wanted.
Spotify and Samsung really need to fix this, but this solution works.
any update at all? This still happens whether i am using my beats headphones or airpods. Extremely annoying. Doesn’t matter if i have any other apps open or what i am doing. If i am not actively watching/doing something with audio then spotify will start when i hit button.
This problem happens on any Bluetooth device.
Once you press play it'll launch the last played audio on Spotify. After trying every possible solution I found the fix to the problem.
Phone Settings - Apps - Spotify - Uninstall - OK
This works on every device.
After a little bit trying i find the solution for myself and i want to share with you. My android version is 10.
Firstly go settings, apps, spotify and go to mobile data, disable "allow use mobile data on background"
Secondly on the spotify optinos go manage battery settings, enable "background restriction". That solves my issue. I hope this help you as well.
You can follow screenshots below. My android is turkish language. So if you dont understand you can translate from that language.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! What a relief.
