Bottom icon tray should adjust to the screen size or revert to old functionallity

Somewhere around version 7.0.0 a tray with icons was added to the mobile app which stays persistent on (almost) every screen (at the bottom). Considering the minimal space on mobile devices I think this is a big user unfriendly feature. I can remember that previous versions of the app had a menu which could be activated by sliding from left to right, which in my opinion was more user friendly (and saves space on the screen)
